Meet: RWBG Invitational(Newark Valley) - 3/31/12

Meet Results

Score: No Team Score

Meet Summary:  Forecasts for a mid-50's day gradually deteriorated until meet directors feared overnight snow would coat the track and cancel the steeplechase. It didn't get that bad, but it wasn't the March weather enjoyed since opening practices. Raw 35 degree mist and light winds gradually improved throughout the day but no one broke out the T-shirt and flip-flops at this meet. Four Wildcats travelled south with Coach Vermeulen to gather first experiences for the 2012 season. Abby Kastick placed 2nd in the cold steeplechase, her first effort enlivened by adventures at the water barrier. Lindsay Weaver followed with a 6th in the 1500m and Amy Hannahan later placed 3rd in the 800m. Late in the afternoon, those three joined Olivia Kastick to capture 3rd in the 4x800. Great times? No--but good experiences early in the season and good data gathered with which to build better performances.

Meet:  West Genesee vs. Liverpool @ WG

Meet Results

Score: Liverpool - 79, WG - 62

Meet Summary: The 'cats had a game-plan for the upset--and came close. Some key events, however, did not go their way and Liverpool was able to sweep the relays for the points needed to seal the meet. The Wildcat field event athletes scored 68% of their possible points, an encouraging development for the team, while the distance squad had a particularly tough day and will look to improve against Baldwinsville. A stronger, healthier team will improve into the season.

Outstanding Performances: Kelly Powell(400m); Paige Copeland(100hh)

Athlete-of-the-Meet:  Melissa Bakowski - Melissa placed 2nd in both the 200 and 100 meter dashes while winning the high jump with a leap of 5' 10", the best Wildcat HJ effort in the past five seasons.

Meet: West Genesee @ Baldwinsville

Meet Results

Score: Baldwinsville - 87, West Genesee - 54

Meet Summary: The wheels did not come off the bus, but the Wildcats had anticipated a much closer meet. Baldwinsville made sure that did not happen on the strength of their speedsters. They swept the 100 and 200 meter events, then took all the relays. Despite wins in the 100hh, 1500m, 3000m, pole vault, shot put and triple jump events, the 'cats could not overcome those relay and sprint losses. They were, however, pushed to many personal records and their best 4x100 time of the season. The pieces are slowly coming together...

Outstanding Performances:  Kelly Powell(1500m/400m); Melissa Bakowski(200m); Emily Frazee(200m); Emily Barriere(HJ); Valerie Pirro(400m); Elise Dunshee(4x800R)

Athlete-of-the-Meet:  Paige Copeland - Paige ran 2nd in the 400IH but with her best time in two season. She then return and clocked a PR in the 100hh to lead a 1-2 WG finish in that event.

Meet: Tully 'Friday Night Lights' Girls Invitational

Meet Results

Score: No team score

Meet Summary: A two mile backup on I81 due to an accident delayed WG and about 12 other schools, forcing the meet to start late. Then the winds blew in stronger than expected, compromising several sprint events. The sun set and the winds died, only to re-surge late in the evening toward meet's close. The final event--the pentathlon 800m--went off after 11:00pm and was won by WG's Emily Barriere, who placed 4th in that event. Though a number of Wildcats were thwarted by wind and/or delays in their attempts at PR efforts, all gained valuable experience and several enjoyed "ah-hah" moments that will lead to new levels of performance into May.

Outstanding Performances: Valerie Pirro(Novice 200m); Alyssa Zeman(400m); Bri Richardson(Triple Jump); Alycia Andolina(1500m)

Athlete-of-the-Meet:  Elise Dungee - Following an impressive ten second PR in a 4x800 lead-off at the Baldwinsville dual meet, Elise did everything right in the Novice 1500 meter. She took charge in her crowded heat from the gun, then answered surges by her Skaneateles challenger and finally closed the deal with a winning finishing kick that in the final 200 meters turned a close contest into an eight second victory and personal record. It was the Wildcats lone victory of the meet.

Meet: West Genesee vs Henninger

Meet Results

Score:  WG-117, Henninger-20

Meet Summary: The Wildcats were able to overpower a game but small Henninger team by sheer numbers. The distance squad scored 100% of its possible points while the hurdlers took 94.4% of theirs. The most evenly contested area was Field, but the 'cats still prevailed there with 69.4% of possible points. Some improvements were discernible within the lopsided score. Most notable were better performances in the triple jump and the 100m dash, as well as the 4x100 and shot put. Warm weather and targeted training should continue those improvements.

Outstanding Performances: Melissa Bakowski(100m); Erica Fitch(Shot Put); Valerie Pirro(4x800/LJ); Allison Iles(100m); Mo McInerney(Shot Put).

Athlete-of-the-Meet:  Abby Kastick - Directed to pace a teammate to a qualifier time, Abby still managed a season-best 1500m effort and a win. She then returned later for the 3000m and, running alone, powered to another season best and solid 11:19.1 effort.

Meet: Skaneateles-Marcellus Girls Invitational

Meet Results

Score: No Team Scores

Meet Summary: Cool but calming winds and sunshine greeted the Wildcats as they travelled to the close and comfortable confines of neighboring Marcellus High School for a well-run and on-time girls-only invitational. The squad was small, shrunk by the call of Junior Prom. One key runner fell to illness and could not attend. The small 16 girl squad, however, enjoyed good competition and more than a few personal records demonstrating steady improvements as the key to successful seasons. Paige Copeland and Bri Richardson both made the 100hh final but neither were able to break into the scoring top-6. Copeland returned, however, in the 400IH to place 5th. The 1500m produced two ribbon finishes by Abby Kastick(5th) and Lindsay Weaver(6th), both seasonal records. After taking charge in the critical third 200m of the 800m race, Amy Hannahan lost a to-the-wire sprint but placed 2nd with a sub-2:30, her best of the season. The JV SMR squad of Nicole Paone, Valerie Pirro, Tianna DeChick and Carlee Kingston went right to front on Paone's opening leg. Pirro then laid down a blistering 400m leg to open a wide lead that neither DeChick or Kingston would relinquish as the young runners logged a very respectable 4:54.01 SMR.

Outstanding Performances: Valerie Pirro(SMR 400m); Amy Hannahan(800m); Tiana DeChick(Long Jump)

Athlete-of-the-Meet:  Abby Uczen - Down to her final pole vault try at 7-6 and struggling, Abby made some key adjustments and cleared the normally routine height. She then went 8-0 to match her PR. Not stopping there, Abby put in her best run-up of the meet to clear 8-6 for a personal record and 4th place in the contest. Her PR made Abby the currently #2 ranked freshman vaulter in NewYork State.

Meet: WG at CNS, 5/2/12

Meet Results

Score: CNS-105, WG-36

Meet Summary: The 'cats knew they had one of the league's best teams at that team's home track. The emphasis, then, was on improving performances. That they did, with many personal records against the deep CNS squad. Seniors Kelly Powell and Amy Hannahan broke through with winning efforts. The RFA Invitational is next.

Outstanding Performances:  Amy Hannahan(800m)/4x100R/Melissa Bakowski(100m)

Meet: RFA Invitational, 5/5/12

Meet Results

Score: 10 of 22

Meet Summary: The team did not compete with the intention of a team score but still managed a mid-meet score. Again, the girls came with the intention of notching PR's and hitting standards for either the sectional championship or the open qualifier meet. And again, they accomplished their goals, with some outstanding performances on a day that began to resemble real spring.

Outstanding Performances: Katie Zwerger(3000m)/Mo McInerney(SP)/Olivia Kastick(1500m)

Athlete-of-the-Meet:  Abby Uczen - For the second straight invitational meet, Abby stepped up for team's finest performance. It was one of those days. A strategic late entry minimized her number of vaults. Good thing, too, for Abby quickly matched her 8' 6" personal record, then went on to clear 9' 0" which tied the school record. She then set the record at 9' 3", re-set it at 9' 6" and 9' 9'.  Ten feet almost happened but fatigue had taken it's toll. Her day's work, however, put her atop the Section III Class AA standings .

Meet: WG vs Corcoran, 5/8/12

Meet Results

Score: WG-100; Corcoran-32

Meet Summary: Some team members were competing in their 4th meet in eleven days, so it was good to be doing it at home. This was Senior Day for Olivia Brown, Paige Copeland, Amy Hannahan, Kristina Konfederat, Kelly Powell and Alyssa Zeman. They had a victorious send-off, with a strong performance in which the team won 13 of the 17 meet events, including a double win in the 100hh/400IH by Copeland and three 1-2-3 sweeps(1500m, 100hh, 800m). Many team members ended their 2012 season with personal records while those with sectional standards move on, with most competing in the ESM Girls Invitational.

Outstanding Performances: Melissa Bakowski(100m & 200m)/4x400m/4x100

Meet: ESM Invitational, 5/10/12

Meet Results

Team Score: 4 of 16

Meet Summary: Again, the invitational intent was good individual performances in a large-meet setting, but the team still finished near the top of the field. The weather was marginal, actually improving into the evening. A very late night here in 2011 was not, fortunately, repeated, and the athletes were on the bus home before dark. Things did not start well. Senior leader Kelly Powell rolled an ankle on her warm-up and was forced to withdraw, leading to a scratch of the 4x400 relay. Her senior partners, Amy Hannahan and Paige Copeland, did their best however to make up for her absence. Amy continued solid 800 performances with a PR and third place while Paige had no contenders as she ran away with the 400IH event with her best time of the season. Abby Kastick also out-ran the competition as she won the 2000m steeplechase, while Bri Richardson won the 100hh event. The 5/18 CNS Invitational has been added to the spring schedule to prep for the sectional championship.

Outstanding Performances: Paige Copeland(400IH/Amy Hannahan(800m)

Meet: CNS Invitational, 5/18/12

Meet Results

Team Score: 2 of 14

Meet Summary: A small squad travelled north for a final sectional championship tune-up. It was one of the sought-after meet evenings of warm temperatures and a minimal breeze. Almost everything the 'cats entered turned into team points. Of fifteen events entered, top-6 finishes were registered in twelve of them. And most of those were personal records for the athletes, what this kind of meet should provide. Bri Richardson, Abby Kastick, Amy Hannahan, Alycia Andolina, Emily Frazee all came home with personal bests. The 4x100 Relay hit the Open Qualifier mark with their best of the season. This was the second invitational that finished early. No one complained.

Outstanding Performances: Emily Frazee(LJ)/Bri Richardson(100hh/TJ)/Emily Iles(400IH)

Athlete-of-the-Meet:  Brianna Richardson - It was hard to tell who was more excited, Bri or Coach Delsole who had stopped in to help team members. Following a solid 100hh PR event, it was clear that Bri was 'on' this night. And she proved that. Her second attempt in triple jump produced a 34' 6" effort. That eclipsed a 23 year old record. Still not satisfied, she powered to a 34' 11" on jump #3, which places her in the upper echelon of Section III jumpers--as only a sophomore.
