Meet Summaries

Girls: Off to a slower than expected start, this was nonetheless a 'first meet' of adjustments for many athletes to the speed, tight circles and low humidity of indoor track. The improvements will occur as the 'pieces' of this talented group are arranged.

Boys: The point total and team finish doesn't show it, but the boys ran a good first meet. Five relay squads had top-10 finishes, although only one(4x800) scored. And five squads met or exceeded their seed predictions. With the enthusiasm and competitive desire of this group, some interesting performances are sure to follow.

Outstanding Performances

Girls: Katie Bott(TJ), Jamie Hamilton(SMR400m)

Boys:  Josh Karpinski(4x800), Charlie Deragon(4x800), Mike Bott(DMR1600), Stephan Boatwright(DMR400)

Meet Summaries

Girls: The Wildcats continued the seasonal team building process with an improving effort at Hamilton College's Christmas Relays. Six of their 2-person relays scored top-10 finishes in their 23 team fields and single shot-put entry Nicki Severance set a new PR by almost three feet while 8th grader Katie Bott was very impressive in winning her 400m heat with a 10th place overall time for that event. Despite a sub-par jumping day, Megan Salisbury and Olja Kuljanin captured 6th in the Long Jump. The 3000m duo of Colleen Smith and Maggie Nealer also placed 6th as a team while E.J. Reedy and Kayla Murphy joined for 6th in the 1000 meter relay. Elizabeth McMahon and  Sarah Kibby raced to an impressive 1st in the 600 meter relay. In that event, Kibby captured 6th place overall with her best 600m effort while McMahon ran away from the field in the final lap to win by a wide margin. The meet ended with McMahon and Stephanie McGrath lining up for the 1500m relay. For McMahon, it was a different race and a different partner, but the same result. Leading start to finish, she won the event and, with McGrath's 15th place, won the relay. Select individuals/relays will travel south to Cornell for the 1/7 Southern Tier Invitational while the entire team looks forward to its final 'relay meet' on 1/9.

Boys: Progress is progress. The boys continued on that curve at the Christmas Relays with more team scoring in the 2-person 'relay' format. Still in the experimentation phase, some athletes fared well in their events while others will continue finding their strength areas. The 'cats enjoyed top-6 finishes in the 1000m, 600m and 1600m relays. Freshman Ben Seigal continued racing well in his hurdle event with an 11th place overall finish. Following no opening height at the Morse Relays,  senior Josh Cantello proved hard work pays with 13th in the 32 athlete high jump event. The best individual finish went to Charlie Deragon, who might have found his strength event for the season as he placed 3rd in the 1000 meter. Other good first efforts went to Ron Ta(300m), Tom Hopkins(3200m) and Paul DiGiulio(200m) with PR's in their events. Following a short, traditional break, the boys ready for their Kirschenheiter Relays on 1/5.

Meet Summaries

Girls: The girls began the long January process of 'assembling the pieces' as individual event strengths became more apparent. With still a lot of event-experimenting before them, the girls were nevertheless able to distance strength with three top-10 finishes that included a 6th place in the 4x800 with a young squad of 1 junior, two freshman and an 8th grader as well as 2nd in the 4x1600 where anchor Elizabeth McMahon dramatically closed the gap on winning Fayetteville-Manlius with a brilliant 5:12.6 1600, coming through the 1500 mark in 4:53. Kristen Bentley returned to the LJ runway and, teaming with Olja Kuljanin, placed 6th in their 2-person 'relay.' And vaulting alone, Nichia Horvath found the 7-6 height, which gave her a 5th place tie in that 2-person event. A week of badly needed practice time precedes their next meet on January 17th.

Boys: A long evening at Manley Field House for the team. Many athletes continued their seasonal improvements, but the team missed scoring opportunities with 7th place finishes in the DMR and 4x1600 Relay. Solid 'doubles' were registered by Charlie Deragon(DMR 1200/4x1600), Mike Bott(DMR 1600/4x1600), Josh Karpinski(DMR 800/4x1600) and Paul DiGuilio(4x200/SMR 200).

Meet Summaries

Girls: Nine girls traveled south to Cornell University for individual events and relay on the Barton Hall track, site of this year's State Championship. Top-15 performances went to Stephanie McGrath(600-14th), Sarah Kibby(600-11th) and the 4x800 Relay(10th). Elizabeth McMahon got locked up in a 1500 meter barn-burner, placing 3rd in a near photo-finish that was a new school record for that distance. She, McGrath, Kibby and Katie Bott went back to the track late in the afternoon to take 5th in the 4x400 Relay.

Boys:  A small four man boys squad enjoyed some PR's and solid double performances and they ran individual events and the 4x800 Relay.

Meet Summaries

Girls: In their first full-team invitational following the holiday break, the girls got down to business by breaking a school DMR record in winning that event. Stephanie McGrath, Katie Bott, Sarah Kibby and Elizabeth McMahon covered their 20 laps in 12:53.20, shaving almost 15 seconds off the old mark. Theirs was not the only record. Nichia Horvath matched the pole vault record of Danielle Scott with her 8'0" vault. DMR record-setter Elizabeth returned to the track later in the meet to race WG's 2nd fastest 600m ever in taking a 2nd place. Two other Wildcats turned PR's into team scores: Colleen Smith in the 3000m and E.J. Reedy in the 1500.

Boys:  Preferring to slot some athletes in new events, the small boys squad continued battling for respectability. Charlie Deragon helped, as he lowered his 1000m PR with a nice 5th place effort at 2:41.95. Charlie returned later to try his hand at the 600m, his first, and found it to his liking with a 6th place effort of 1:30.56. Senior neophyte Josh Karpinski platooned with Charlie and also notched two PR's in the 1000/600 events. With his first visit to the LJ runway this season, senior captain Stephan Boatwright got right to work, jumping 19-2.5 for 3rd place, and barely missing a 20+ jump with a foot-fault. In only his first varsity 3200, Mike Bott came with a second of scoring with his 7th place 10:26.46. The boys get a week to prepare for their 1/18 John Arcaro Invitational.

Meet Summaries

Girls: Good personal efforts marked the girls meet, with three top-4 scoring efforts. Kristen Bentley registered her best leap of the season(15-8.25) in placing a Long Jump 4th. Maggie Nealer lopped over a half minute from her previous 3000m as she placed 5th in the event(11:34.37). Running without ill anchor-runner, Elizabeth McMahon, the 4x800 relay of McGrath, Maggie Nealer, Sarah Kibby and E.J. Reedy rallied and placed 3rd in that event, one highlighted by a dramatic last lap dual won by Reedy. Despite feeling ill, Elizabeth stepped on the track before heading home and raced an excellent 800 in 2:21.68, placing 2nd.

Boys:  Irony was the order of the day. The boys registered their best team finish of the season but it came with all team points scored by one athlete. Stephan Boatwright was the 'cat of the day with a 4th place in the 500 meter dash, followed by a 3 place Long Jump leap of 19-7, his best of the season. The Wildcats will look to share the scoring load in their final regular season invitational.

Outstanding Performances

Meet Summaries

Girls: An improved team performance was the result of some solid individual performances and a big night for junior Elizabeth McMahon. Nice top-10 finishes came from Maggie Nealer(10th-1000m), Sarah Kibby(10th-1500m); E.J. Reedy(9th-1500m) and Stephanie McGrath(7th-600m). Scoring for the cats were Nichia Horvath(5th-PV); Colleen Smith(5th-3000m); Kristen Bentley(4th-LJ) and the 4x800 Relay(3rd). Elizabeth paced a front-pack in the 1000m for four laps, then turned on the jets with a 34 second final lap to win going away with a school-record, section-leading time of 3:02.10. She then returned to the track and anchored the 4x800 with a 2:20.5 split. The girls now turn their sights to OHSL's and Sectionals, the championship meets.

Boys: Slightly sluggish from some tough workouts, the boys nevertheless mounted a good team effort, missing on a couple of event top-6 scoring opportunities. Best efforts of the evening were registered by Charlie Deragon, who came from the middle of the pack to take 2nd in the 1000m, and Stephan Boatwright who placed 3rd in his first 300m race.

Outstanding Performances

Girls: Elizabeth McMahon(1000m/4x800); Stephanie McGrath(600m)

Meet Summaries

Girls: Scoring in every event but one, the girls squad ran up 100 points for a 2nd place American Division league finish and their largest team point total ever. Enroute, three Wildcats provided Divisional first-place performances: Kristen Bentley-Long Jump; Nichia Horvath-Pole Vault; Elizabeth McMahon-600m. Two of those were school records. Nichia upped her school mark to 8' 6" while Elizabeth dramatically erased a 600m record dating all the way back to the 1974/75 season with her 1:40.10 effort. She led from the start and won by a large margin with the section's 2nd best time this season. This was the best team performance of the season for the Wildcats and some league honors were earned as a result:

1st Team All-League/1st Team All-A2: Elizabeth McMahon - 600m

1st Team All-League/1st Team All-A2: Nichia Horvath - Pole Vault

1st Team All-A2: Kristen Bentley - Long Jump

2nd Team All-A-2: Brittany Jones - Triple Jump

2nd Team All A-2: 4x800R(Stephanie McGrath/Sarah Kibby/E.J. Reedy/Katie Bott)

Boys: The boys were poised for a good team effort, but with injuries to key runners Josh Karpinski and Stephan Boatwright, lost after his first Long Jump attempt, the 'cats were severely weakened and as a result relinquished several team places. Other team members, however, had excellent performances and personal records. Charlie Deragon ran an accomplished triple, scoring in the 1000m, the 1600m and as the anchor of the 4x800 relay. The team hopes to get healthy and be ready for their 2/8 Sectional Championship.

Meet Summaries

Girls: Losing one of its best athletes to a school transfer the week of the meet, the girls regrouped and with a strong team performance, notched a top-4 finish in the tough Class A grouping. Among the many terrific efforts were triple scorers Elizabeth McMahon and Stephanie McGrath and vaulter Nichia Horvath. Select members advance to the State Qualifier Meet while others prepare for spring following some rest.

Boys:  The boys continued to struggle with injuries that eliminated several scoring opportunities and dashed hopes of a top-10 or top-8 finish. Steady performers Mike Bott and Charlie Deragon broke through in their 3200 and 1000 meter events for top-6 finishes, but that was the extent of team scoring. Mike advances to the State Qualifier and the remainder of the team takes a short break before spring sports.

Outstanding Performances

Meet Summaries

Girls: In one of the best 'squad efforts' of any season, the girls 4x800 Relay were simply out-raced by a solid F-M squad for the right to advance to the State Championship, but the 'cats 2nd place effort was a new school record by almost 10 seconds and the result of good relay legs by all: Stephanie McGrath/E.J. Reedy/Sarah Kibby/Elizabeth McMahon. Earlier in the meet, Elizabeth McMahon took to the track for the 1500m looking to run well and qualify for states. Running behind F-M's Kristen Taylor for the early laps, Elizabeth took control of the middle race, then won going away with a final 200m of 35.7. Her 4:44.75 resets Elizabeth's school record and ranks her in the state top-10. The time should propel her to the seeded heat at the 3/4 State Championship held this year in Cornell University's Barton Hall. On the vault runway, Nichia Horvath again equaled her 8-6 school record but it was not enough for a ride to states as she finished 4th in the competition.

Boys: The boys continued on the rough edge of the season. Stephan Boatwright attempted to return from injury to compete in the Long Jump, but was forced to withdraw following warm-ups. Mike Bott was looking for a PR in the 3200m but some mid-race slow splits denied him that goal. The boys will rest up a bit, then begin Outdoor Track training.

Meet Summaries

Girls: Seven girls attended to remain race-ready for the State and National championships. Stephanie McGrath, E.J. Reedy, Sarah Kibby and Elizabeth McMahon chased the school record in the 4x400 Relay but fell a second shy of the 2000 mark. With all team members returning, they'll have another shot in '06/07' but they did log the best team time of this season. Nichia Horvath again equaled her school record in the pole vault and barely missed a new mark on her third and final attempt at 9' 0". Due to illness, Elizabeth McMahon was forced to withdraw from the 1000m but on a short turn-around time, Stephanie McGrath placed 4th in the 600m with a personal record and the best night for a Wildcat. Elizabeth now sets sights on the 3/4 State Championship 1500m event, and six girls continue training for the 3/11 National Scholastic Championship 4x1mile Relay at NYC's Armory Track & Field Center.

Meet Summaries

Girls: Elizabeth McMahon represented West Genesee very well at this year's State Championship. Following a rocky start where she was out-sprinted to the first turn, boxed in and running 10th after lap #1, Elizabeth got down to work. Over the next 3 laps, she moved up, steadily gaining places, coming through the 800 in 2:28.4. From there, she locked up in 1-1 battles with Hilton's Allison Sawyer and Saratoga's Hannah Davidson. With a final lap push, Elizabeth won both those battles and crossed the finish line with a well-deserved 4th place in a deep and talented field. Elizabeth now rejoins her teammates in preparing for the National Scholastic 4x1mile Relay in NYC.

Meet Summaries

Girls: Only a week shy of a four months, the WG girls 4x1mile relay team of E.J. Reedy, Stephanie McGrath, Maggie Nealer, Sarah Kibby with alternates Colleen Smith and Kayla Murphy closed out a long and very successful 05/06 girls Indoor Track season. Training almost a full month after the rest of the team had finished with the team's Sectional Championship, the girls improved both their 04/05 time and their team place. In one of the strongest 4x1mile fields ever(4 teams finished under 21:00, 8 under 22:00), the girls ran 24th in the 28 team event with a 22:55.01 clocking. Congratulations relay members. This was West Genesee's third consecutive qualification and appearance in this national meet. The girls now enjoy a well-earned rest before returning to the large oval's of outdoor.
