Meet Summaries

Girls: Despite several 'miscues' by veterans and nervous-neophytes alike, the girls got their first competition under the belt without serious problems. Sophomore Kristen Bentley quickly established herself as one of the sectional leaders in the Long Jump with a solid 15-2.25 effort. With no members of last year's National Championship 4x1mile Relay returning, newcomers Stephanie McGrath, E.J. Reedy, Maggie Nealer and Katie Rothenberg stepped into the vacancies and won their 4x1600 relay event with a 22:59.55 time that provisionally qualifies them for the 4x1mile championship event in March. With further development of new athletes and expected performances from the veterans, the girls look to remain a highly competitive Section III team this season.

Boys: Forced to pick and choose events due to their small team size, the boys had a look at what will be a very challenging team season. No top-6 scoring events meant the boys were 'skunked' this meet, something they'd rather not face too often this season. A solid 4x200 relay with much room to improve coupled with some field events that should be highly competitive indicates the team can look forward to better team performances.

Meet Summaries

Girls: The girls, despite some sub-par field event performances, took another step up, placing high in the large 24 team field and demonstrating that, with all events doing well, they can compete with some of the top sectional teams. The young distance squad did particularly well, scoring in 3 of their 4 events.

Boys: Missing members and discipline issues took an already small squad and made it even smaller. Nonetheless, the boys managed a 5th place in the 400 meter 2-person relay and saw improvements in many events.

Meet Summaries

Girls: In one of their weaker performances of recent seasons, the girls managed only one scoring event while closely missing several opportunities. Missing athletes, sick athletes and a DMR eliminated from the meet due to time constraints all conspired against the girls. There were some personal bests and competitive efforts, just not enough of them. The girls look to re-focus and re-group for the following week.

Boys:  Clearly, it will be a fight all season long for Wildcat team points, but many team members did what is necessary for success: show improvement. Better marks and times in a number of individual events keeps them moving in the right direction. Some solid performances and PR's dotted an otherwise tough night.

Meet Summaries

Girls: This was a meet marked by sprinter and field event scoring efforts and a host of PR's for all athletes. 16 of 19 individual performers notched personal records in their events. The girls rebounded nicely from a poor previous outing to once again become competitive. Three scoring events(Kristen Bentley, 3rd-Long Jump; Danielle Scott, 5th-Pole Vault; 4x800R-5th) were accompanied by 5 other top-10 efforts. Danielle Scott's 5th place in the pole vault was also an indoor school record.

Boys:  The boys saw improvements from their sprinters this meet. Despite concerns for a recent muscle pull, Stephan Boatwright race out of a lower heat and placed 5th overall in the 400m event. That pleasant suprise was matched by the solid long jumping of Steve Brink, who also placed 5th. Best distance effort of the evening was JV runner Matt Kalwara, who ran 30 seconds under target time in the 1500 meter.

Outstanding Performances

Girls: Danielle Scott-Pole Vault; Megan Salisbury-200m; Kristen Bentley-Long Jump

Boys: Stephan Boatwright-400m; Steve Brink-Long Jump; Matt Kalwara-1500m

Meet Summaries

Girls: For the second meet, the girls put together a middle-of-the-pack finish. They are still looking for that total team effort and hope it occurs in the championship meets coming up. Two distance and two field events combined for the team scoring, with the addition of a host of personal records that indicated continued development. Top-6 scoring finishes belonged to Kristen Bentley in the LJ(6th), Danielle Scott in the PV(5th), the 4x800 relay and Katie Rothenberg with an impressive 10 second improvement in the her 1500m time for a 3rd place finish. The girls set their sights on individual bests in the OHSL Championship next week.

Boys: A number of personal records masked what appeared to be a sub-par team night. Three-quarters of the individual-event athletes bettered previous marks, with Steve Brink's 5th in the Long Jump the best performance.  The 4x200 Relay also notched a season best and crept closer to top-6 scoring while Stephan Boatwright 'lengthened' his range with a credible 600 meter race.

Outstanding Performances

Girls: Katie Rothenberg-1500m; Brittany Jones-Triple Jump; Katie Naton-Triple Jump

Boys: Anthony Hammond-Shot Put

Meet Summaries

Girls: The girls recorded a 'respectable' finish. The team policy of involving all attendance-eligible athletes meant some juggling of the meet roster and some athletes running their weaker events. Still, a lot of athletes got into the scoring action in this meet where only OHSL A1 schools vie for top-6. Of note, the 4x400 Relay has begun to demonstrate late-blooming vitality with the emergence of sprinter Kristen Bentley as a 400 meter runner. The eye-catching effort of the evening belonged to Maggie Nealer as she shaved over 30 seconds off her previous indoor 3000m PR with a Sectional top-20 2nd place race time that also met the Open Qualifier standard. The girls look for that elusive total-team effort at their 2/8 Sectional Championship.

Boys:  In championships, a small team usually depends heavily on the performances of its top athletes. The boys got those from a few, but not others as they struggled for team points. Steve Brink cracking the 19 foot barrier in the LJ, Dan Kulak running strong in the final for a 5th, a place and a PR for Sean Richards in Shot Put, the steady improvement of the 4x200 relay and Stephan Boatwright's second successive solid 600m race for 3rd were the meet highlights.

Outstanding Performances

Girls: Maggie Nealer - 3000m; Kristen Bentley - 4x400 relay; Katie Hall - 55hh

Boys: Stephan Boatwright - 600m; Steve Brink - LJ; 4x200 Relay

Meet Summaries

Girls: The 'total team effort' the girls hoped to garner for their final meet eluded them, but some satisfying improvements hinted at stronger and more balanced teams in the future. Kristen Bentley asserted herself again as a top Sectional competitor with both LJ and 400m PR's. Katie Naton moved back her TJ board and leapt a foot and a half beyond her previous best. And the young 4x400 Relay chopped more seconds off their season best as they qualified for the Open Qualifier meet.

Boys:  Most of the pieces fell into place for the small boys squad--just not all of them. Hoping for a top-10 finish to a very challenging season, the guys fell a few performances--and a few points--shy. Charlie Deragon clocked a personal best in the 1600m and was only a few seconds off a top-6 finish as he placed 9th. Bothered by a muscle twinge, Steve Brink was unable to match his best in the Long Jump. Jeff Spies saw himself soar over the pole vault bar during his final attempts, only to come down on that same bar. He still grabbed a 4th for the team. It was, however, another step up for Stephan Boatwright, a sprinter who put his XC training to good use in the 600, lowering his PR again, placing 5th and qualifying for the Open Qualifier Meet. Same too, for the 4x200 Relay of Brink, Boatwright, Dan Kulak and Dan Figueiredo. They clocked their best of the season in placing 4th.

Meet: Open Qualifier Meet, Boys/Girls-2/15/05

Meet Summaries

Girls: No advances to the state championship for the girls, though they clocked a much-improved 4x800 relay time to finish third and position themselves for outdoor. Maggie Nealer in the 3000 and Katie Rothenberg in the 1500 both suffered off-nights, but that was not the case with Stephanie McGrath who notched PR's in both her 4x800 and 4x400 legs. The 4x1mile Relay group of Stephanie McGrath, Katie Naton, E.J. Reedy, Maggie Nealer, Katie Naton and Sarah Kibby now await word that they have been accepted for the National Championship in New York City.

Boys: Best thing about Stephan Boatwright's place after a 4th place 600m finish(top 3 go to 'State') is being a junior. Stephan's rapid rise as a 600 threat in the section will continue in the 05/06 season. The 4x200 relay of Steve Brink, Dan Figueiredo, Dan Kulak and Stephan Boatwright ran their third consecutive PR for a successful season conclusion.

Outstanding Performances

Girls: Stephanie McGrath - 4x800/4x400/4x800 Relay

Boys: Stephan Boatwright - 600m/4x200 Relay
