Meet Summaries

Girls: The large 2003/04 version of Wildcats Indoor Track got in valuable first meet experience and produced some pleasant surprises as newcomers and veterans alike notched solid performances. With a number of top-10 relay finishes and good individual efforts, the team is off to a positive start. Highlight of the meet was the early-season dominating performance of the 4x1600 relay team which won going away against excellent competition. Relay members Betsy Bubnack, Erin Hennigan, Stephanie Bartlett and Elizabeth McMahon shattered the old school record and currently lead the state in this event. Nichia Horvath and Danielle Scott teamed for a 3rd place in the pole vault relay. Best newcomer performance goes to Nicole Spinner for an excellent 200 meter leg in the 4x200 and a top-10 leap in the Long Jump.

Boys:  The boys squad enjoyed a good opening meet and a major team improvement over the same meet in 02/03. The 'cats scored in two field events, the Long Jump and Pole Vault relays thanks to PR efforts by Steve Brink and Jeff Spies. The 55hh tandem of Joel Wilmore and Chris Juiliani proved they will be one of the best duos in Section III with their 2nd place relay finish and #5/#7 individually finishes respectively.

Meet Summaries

Boys:   The boys continued 'trying on the season,' with a number of athletes entered in new events and relay team members shifted. The improvements continue for a trio of emerging team leaders as Joel Wilmore placed 5th in the 55hh, Chris Juiliani sparkled with a 4th place in his first-ever 600m, and Jeff Spies notched another PR in the pole vault with a 4th place vault of 10'. The SMR team of Wilmore, Spies, Mark Smith and Charlie Deragon came oh-so-close, placing 7th, .2 seconds out of a scoring 6th place.

Girls:  The distance power of the girls team was put to good use today as they won two events on the strength of middle-distance runners and earned a 3rd place team finish in a 26 team field. Betsy Bubnack opened her 600m season with a 3rd place. Stephanie Bartlett chipped in 5th in the 1000m. The Distance Medley squad of Bartlett, Andrea McCarthy, Maggie Nealer and E.J. Reedy scored 4th. A very young(two 8th graders & two 9th graders) 4x800 relay of Katie Naton, Sarah Kibby, Maggie Nealer and Stephanie McGrath earned a 5th place in that event. And the SMR team of Bubnack, Nicole Spinner, Kristen Bentley and Elizabeth McMahon put a cap on the evening winning that finale event in school record time. Bentley also gave notice she's the best 9th grade long jumper around with a 5th place leap in that event.

The marquee event was probably the 1500 meter run, with five fall Cross-Country state championship qualifiers entered, WG's Elizabeth McMahon among them. McMahon shadowed leaders Megan Nolan and Niki Junod for six and a half laps before surging to the front to win the event in 4:58.68, Section III's tops so far this season and a current state top-5 time.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  The boys squad continued trying out athletes in different events, searching for the best team configuration while providing event experience for the athletes. The 55hh duo of Joel Wilmore and Chris Juiliani raced to another 2nd place in their hurdle relay, while the 4x400 improved its time in a 5th place finish. Distance runner Charlie Deragon notched two personal records in his 1600m and 800m legs of the DMR and SMR, while Jeff Spies continued to improve with a second consecutive PR in the Pole Vault event as he placed 5th.

Girls:   Another top-6 finish was registered by the girls despite much experimentation with team members in various events. Many athletes set personal records, with 8 of 10 field event athletes doing so. The Long Jump relay of Kristen Bentley and Nicole Spinner moved up in the Section III ranks with an excellent 3rd place finish, while the 4x1600 Relay won again and qualified for the National Scholastic Championship this March in New York City.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  Though not reflected in their team standing, the boys squad notched several important improvements at their Constantino meet. The 4x400 relay of Stephan Boatwright, Joel Wilmore, Doug Petroff and Chris Juilian juggled their order and lowered their seasonal PR with a 6th place in a tough field. They now look for a State Qualifier mark in the coming week. The 4x200 relay also lowered its mark with a 4th place. Steve Brink, Stephan Boatwright, Mark Smith and Dan Kulak hope to smooth our some exchanges and get into the thick of OHSL and Sectional races. Kulak also registered his best 55m of the season, climbing into a top-10 finish while Chris Juiliani also lowered his 600m for a 6th place.

Girls:  Back on the track and runways, the girls attempted to shake off the rust of two weeks race inaction. They managed a host of PR improvements, but the competitive lay-off due to weather-related meet cancellations clearly affected some athletes. The 4x400 relay of Sarah Kibby, Katie Naton, Andrea McCarthy and Amy Palmeri ran well, placing 6th. Elizabeth McMahon stepped up for her first 1000m of the season and toughed out a 3rd place in a strong field with her State Qualifier mark of 3:07.31. Erin Hennigan's first 3000m of the season was a 5th place success and just shy of the State Qualifier mark. Stephanie Bartlett ran a State Qualifier mark of 5:06.67 for a 6th place in the 1500m. A tired 4x800 relay still managed a 4th place while the 4x200 relay overcame several disasters(2nd leg runner tripped from behind) to place 6th. Kristen Bentley continued performing well in the Long Jump with a 5th place. A excellent non-scoring effort was registered by 8th grader Katie Rothenberg, who raced to an 8th in the 1500m with a 5:21.99 mark.

Meet Results

Girls Varsity:

Team Place: 13 of 23

Meet Summary

Girls: Missing some keys runners from the meet/events due to conflicts, the team shuffled athletes around in several events and saw improvements not reflected in the team score. Field events athletes suffered through an off-form night. Only Kristen Bentley's 6th in the Long Jump scored for the 'cats. The distance veterans, likewise, were unable to muster scoring efforts in the open events. Bright spots for the team were solid non-scoring performances by younger runners. PR efforts were notched by Katie Naton in the 800 meter, Maggie Nealer in her first 3000m, E.J. Reedy in the 1500m and Sarah Kibby in the 500m. Katie Rothenberg also continued her impressive season with a solid first-ever 3000m 8th place performance. The Wildcats had to wait until the end to score team points. Those came with the 4x200 Relay's 5th place. Nicole Spinner, Marquita Colbert, Kristen Bentley and Jen Evertz ran a team best 1:58.54 despite 'traffic problems' in one exchange, with an impressive Evertz anchor split of 28.3. The DMR of Stephanie Bartlett, Andrea McCarthy, Erin Hennigan and Elizabeth McMahon was uncertain until McMahon's arrival for the meet 20 minutes prior to the gun. They pulled together, however, and raced to second, with McMahon running down several places in her 1600m anchor leg and exploding for a 34.5 second final 200m.  Their 13:17.30 ranks 5th best in Section III for the year.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  Ouch! In a division including sectional powers C-NS and Liverpool, the Wildcats found themselves in 3rd place entering the final 4x200m Relay event thanks to a terrific team effort. Running strong in second place through three legs of the relay, disaster struck in the form of a dropped baton. The 'cats quickly slipped from 2nd to 6th place in that event and from 3rd to 5th in the final team standings. Tough break aside, the team competed with focus and determination, scoring in all areas of the meet. On to Sectionals....

Girls: The girls were edged for the divisional third-place slot by Baldwinsville despite a number of terrific performances. Top-6 honors went out to a number of individuals and all three relays. Danielle Scott matched her pole vault school record in taking 5th in that event. Busting through for their first top-six finishes were all three of the team's 8th graders, Katie Rothenberg(1000m), Katie Naton(600) and Sarah Kibby(4x400 relay). A PR propelled Kristen Bentley to 5th in the Long Jump. Middle-distance runners contributed much with Erin Hennigan in the 3000m(3rd), Stephanie Bartlett in the 1000m(4th) and Betsy Bubnack in the 1500m(5th).  Betsy was joined in that race's scoring by Maggie Nealor(6th). Running her first-ever 600m event, Elizabeth McMahon made good on the opportunity by winning that event and coming within .7 seconds of a school record.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  Snake-bit. Looking to end their team season with a solid performance and top-10 finish, the boys saw several event opportunities slip away, highlighted by a fall in the 4x200 meter event that eliminated them from scoring and cost them several team spots. The 4x400 relay placed 6th and  Steve Brink jumped to a 5th in the LJ. Chris Juiliani and Doug Petroff both PR'd enroute to 6th places in the 600m and 1000m events respectively. Best finish for the 'cats was by Jeff Spies with a 3rd place pole vault. This winter, the team battled adverse weather and lack of proper practice facilities, and they deserve a lot of credit for their enthusiasm and perseverance.

Girls: Like the boys, weather and administrative indifference to proper facilities has made consistent training difficult at best. The girls, however, rallied for a great team effort in tying Fayetteville-Manlius for third place behind sectional powers Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool. The girls called upon their middle-distance strength and those runners responded. Running almost 10 seconds faster than their previous PR, the 4x400 relay started the meet with a stellar 2nd place finish. Erin Hennigan notched another indoor PR in the 3000m with a gutsy 6th place in a star-studded field. She was followed by Elizabeth McMahon, who PR'd in the 1000m while surging to a 2nd place. That was matched by an exciting 2nd place and personal record in the 600 meter by Betsy Bubnack. Stephanie Bartlett and Kristin Bentley toughed their ways to 6ths in the 1500m and Long Jump events, while Danielle Scott equaled her best in taking a Pole Vault 6th. Non-scoring PR's were also racked up by Katie Naton(600m), Maggie Nealer(1000m), Stephanie McGrath(1500m), Amy Palmeri(300m), Katie Knowlton(TJ) and Brittany Jones(TJ). Taking the track for the 4x800, the squad of Bubnack, Bartlett and McMahon were all coming off double events, with only 8th grader Katie Rothenberg fresh. No matter. Bubnack opened and place the squad second, trailing Liverpool. Katie R. posted a super 2:33.4 to keep the Wildcats in contention, then handed the baton to a tired Bartlett, who battled and closed on Liverpool. Looking at a 20 meter gap, McMahon used a fast start to close within five meters in one lap, then stalked the Liverpool leader for two laps before unleashing her now signature kick. Elizabeth clocked a 34 second final 200 and a 2:24.8 800 meter split to propel the squad to victory as Sectional Champions in that event. The girls' championship effort was a tremendous team finale and impressive response to a season of adversity.

Meet: Section III State Qualifiers - Boys/Girls-2/24/04

Meet Summaries

Boys:  Chris Juliani came close with a 4th place finish in the 600 meter run, missing a trip to States by one place. Jeff Spies finished his solid Indoor season with an 8th place in the Pole Vault.

Girls: Tired legs kept Elizabeth McMahon from a trip to the Carrier Dome and states. Still recovering from illness, she was game, posting a school record 3:03.48 in the 1000 meter but finishing 4th. Great personal record runs were logged by Erin Hennigan and Katie Rothenberg in the 3000 meter. Katie's 11:21.63 is the fastest 8th grader time in that event. Erin was a tad faster in 11:21.24.

Meet Summaries

Girls: Working through illness and injury, the girls relay of Betsy Bubnack, Erin Hennigan, Stephanie Bartlett and Elizabeth McMahon made WG's first trip to Indoor Nationals in NYC a success. On the fast Armory banked track, the girls were introduced immediately to the caliper of running at this national level. They ran tough, finishing 13th in the nation with school 4x1Mile and 4x1600m records. This was a great ending to a season of challenging weather and training facilities.
