Meet Summaries

Boys: The boys launched their 2000/2001 season with a 'half-squad' due to runners still in transition from XC. Still, good efforts were registered by all the veterans/newcomers while the team notched a much improved start from last year's season opener. Chris Morse enjoyed an excellent evening leading his Pole Vault Relay to a 3rd place finish and clocking the team's fastest 200m split of the evening.

Girls:  Likewise, the girls entered the new season with many members missing but still registerd some solid first efforts by newcomers and veterans. The SMR team enjoyed a third place finish.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  The boys team took a step up with a nearly full squad and many solid early-season performances in this 2-person relay meet. A 4th place finish by the 200 meter relay team of Greg Hamilton and Chris Morse bodes well for WG's competitiveness this season in the sprint distances. The 6th place effort of the 600 meter team of Ian Gilfillan and Mike Martin gave the middle-distance boys a 'presence' in the short runs. The WG meet highlight was certainly the 1st Place victory of Pat Gaffney and Jeff Dugan in the 3200m Relay. Their impressive 0:26 margin over 2nd place RFA/Liverpool was the result of solid pacing, excellent race tactics, Jeff's 5th place effort and Pat's dramatic final lap surge past RFA's Aaron Verminski for an individual 1st place finish.

Girls: Despite the absence of last year's 1000m State Qualifier, Katie Bubnack, and several other team members, the girls team racked up some impressive 2-person relay performances and a Team 4th Place Finish.   WG showed some field event strength with a 5th place finish in the Long Jump Relay(Kristen Abert/Darcia Rufus) and an impressive 3rd in the Triple Jump(Jen Bott/Shimmy Williams). Middle-distance again provided the bulk of scoring with place finishes in every event from the 600m up.  Monica Macro and Kim Capraro teamed for 6th place in the 3000m Relay. 5th place in the 1000m Relay went to Kerry Banazek and Julia Faliy. Shannon Morris and Christina Phelan took 3rd in the 600m Relay. Another 3rd place was grabbed by Banazek and Phelan in the 1500m Relay. And the WG meet highlight belonged to Shannon Morris and Jen Bott for their 1st Place medal performance in the 800m Relay. Shannon took the pace out early and powered to an individual 1st place finish despite a near collision on the final lap with a spectator that had wandered onto the track.

Meet Summaries

Boys: The boys squad continued to improve, moving up to a 7th place team finish. Contributions from a strengthening middle-distance squad were the key. In its first appearance of the season, the 4x800 relay squad of Matt Winters, Jeff Dugan, Rocco Paone and Pat Gaffney ran a strong 2nd place and one of Section III's stronger effotts to date. That squad's Dugan, Paone and Gaffney were joined by Mike Martin to pace to a 3rd place in the 4x1600, highlighted by Pat Gaffney's solid 4:46.5 split in attempting to catch #2 Liverpool. The Pole Vault relay of Chris Morse and Mike Mattiaccio continued to score, with a 4th place finish. A return next week to more traditional events will test the individual strength of the team.

Girls: A weaker Field events presence this week by the girls did not deter the middle-distance runners from logging impressive efforts. Katie Bubnack, Christina Phelan, Kerry Banazek and Shannon Morris got the meet started in a big way with an impressive 1st place battle with rival Skaneateles in the DMR. The girl's School Record 13:07.3 performance placed them 9th in New York State on the current state leaderboard. Katie, Kerry and Shannon 'doubled back' with little rest to run to a 2nd place in the 4x800, demonstrating good mid-season conditioning and race savy. The 4x1600 group of Monica Macro, Jen Bott, Kim Capraro and Christina Phelan teamed for a 5th place and a school record in that event. On the TJ runway, Jen Bott and Shimmy Williams combined for a 6th place to compete the Wildcat's scoring.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  The boys team enjoyed another solid team performance, with the athletes still experimenting with new events and improving in others. It was 'PR-Day' for many, with both Pat Gaffney and Jeff Dugan slicing nearly 10 seconds off their previous 1600m PR's. Pat won the 1600 with a Section-leading time, with Jeff not far behind in 6th. Chris Morse broke the 10' barrier in the Pole Vault for a PR and is tied for 5th in Section III. An exciting highlight was the 1600 meter DMR anchor leg battle by Mike Martin, who gutted the boys team to a 3rd place finish with an 'unofficial' PR of 4:56.0 that included moving the team from 6th position and nipping a competitor at the line.

Girls: Several solid individual efforts punctuated a more difficult team-night for the ladies. Shannon Morris again established herself as one of the Section's top 1000 meter competitors with a solid 2nd place effort in that event. She also doubled-back for a 2nd in the 600m. Shannon is second on the Section III leaderboard in both those events. Katie Bubnack's 5:08.6 4th place in the 1500 was a good mid-season mark. On the runway, Kristen Abert continued to improve her Long Jumps with a 13-10.5 effort good for 5th place and a spot on the Section III leaderboard. A dramatic improvement was registered by first year sophomore Monica Macro who, running only her second 3000m, lowered her PR by over 25 seconds in placing 6th in that event. Monica is currently ranked #7 on the leaderboard. And Kim Capraro cracked the 6:00 barrier in the 1500 on her first effort this season.

Meet Summaries

Boys: The boys team shuffled things around in this meet, with athletes running out of event in several instances. Faulty hand-offs marred both relays. Anthony Kent broke into the scoring with a 6th in the 55hh, as did Greg Hamilton in the 200 meter dash, also with a 6th. Chris Morse continues to jump with the leaders in PV and registered a 6th place. Sectional 1600 leader, Pat Gaffney, dropped to a fast 800 field and garnered a 4th with teammate Jeff Dugan hot on his heels for a 6th. The 4x800 Relay squandered a good night with poor hand-offs, still finishing 4th.

Girls:  It was a tough night for the ladies as the competition improved in several events. A 6th place 4x400 relay started the evening. Shannon Morris registered an excellent 800 time for a 3rd place. Katie Bubnack came from back in the pack to grab a 3rd in the 1500 while Kerry Banazek ran and indoor 3000m PR for 6th. Kristen Abert continued to jump well in the LJ, grabbing the 6th place spot and Jen Bott's 30-11 triple jump was good enough for 5th. In JV action, Nikki Zalewski threw a PR in taking 5th place for the Shot Put.

Meet Summaries

Boys: A number of PR's and excellent performances were offset by a generally weaker team presence. Highlight event of the evening was Pat Gaffney's win in the 3200 with a Section-leading 10:04.0. Greg Hamilton again broke into the scoring with a 6th in the 300m and Jeff Dugan also grabbed a 6th in his 3200 race.

Girls:  Two dominate performances were the story for the ladies. Shannon Morris showed continued improvement with a win in the 1000m where she led start to finish. Jen Bott improved her TJ school record with a 5th place effort of 31-11.25. PR were registered by several, among them Tina Hadlich in the 55hh and Nikki Zalweski in the Shot Put.

Meet Summaries

Boys: Some interesting successes were interspersed with difficult races for this 'small-squad' meet. Matt Winters ran tough in finishing third in the 600m and demonstrating his speed. Greg Hamilton continue to sprint with Section III's best in taking a 6th in the 300m. Pat Gaffney's string of  'front-of-the-line' finishes took a slight detour as he started slow and fought traffic throughout his 1600 for a 3rd place. A PR and breaking through the 10' barrier were Chris Morse's pole vault highlights as he placed 5th.

Girls: The middle-distance ladies focused on the relays and some group speed work. Their biggest competitive excitement came as Shannon Morris continued to run well with an excellent closing leg of the 4x800 that took the team from 8th to 4th position.

Meet Summaries

Boys: A improved finish for 2000/2001, with a number of PR efforts, made for a good night for the boys squad. Highlights were the 1st place 1000m effort of Pat Gaffney and an excellent 3rd place effort in the 1600 by Jeff Dugan.

Girls: A generally sub-par night for the girls as PR's were in short supply. Two exceptions were individual best's for Tina Hadlich in the 55hh and Shannon Morris's excellent alone-in-front 1500m win, the 4th best Sectional time of the year.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  Once again, a larger squad this year led to an improved Sectional finish, though injuries and sub-par performances cost the team better scoring opportunities. Pat Gaffney continued a solid year with a 2nd place sectional finish in the 1000 meter and a 4th in the 1600. Anthony Kent completed the season strong, with a 6th in the 55hh. Other Sectional Top-6 finished went to Tim Morse(6th-PV) and the 4x800 Relay(5th)

Girls: The girls put a small team out on the track, forcing most to compete in multiple events. They handled it well, focusing on the races at hand. A 5th in the 4x400R was followed by Monica Macro's PR 3000m effort for a 5th place. Shannon Morris and Katie Bubnack then went 2-3 in the 1000m, while Jen Bott grabbed a 6th in the TJ. The evening's highlight for the Wildcats was their unexpected victory in the 4x800R. Katie Bubnack, Kerry Banazek, Monica Macro and Shannon Morris combined to give WG a repeat Indoor 4x800 Championship. With their 2000 Outdoor Track 4x800R championship, the Wildcats enjoy three consecutive championships in that event going into the spring season.

*Qualified for State Championship

Meet Summaries

Boys:  A tough race for Pat Gaffney dashed hopes of advancing to the State Championship. It was a stellar season otherwise, with probably a big season ahead in Outdoor. Some 'off-time' prior to State Qualifiers too some of the sharpness off Greg Hamilton's 300m effort, but he also demonstrated good things to come in the outdoor season.

Girls: The Wildcats will once again be represented at the State Championship thanks to the excellent 1000 meter effort of Shannon Morris. Shannon's personal PR in that event and the 3rd best Sectional effort of the season propel her to the Carrier Dome on March 10th. The 4x800 Relay team gave it their all but could not match the running power of Skaneateles, finishing 2nd but posting a season PR enroute and continuing the proud WG girls tradition of 4x800R competitiveness.

*adjusted time for meet official start-line error

Meet Summary

Shannon had intentions of a top state finish and a 1000m school record. Hopes for the school record in the 1000 were dashed, however, when meet officials erroneously placed Shannon and others on the wrong outside box stagger line, thus forcing them to run approximately 1020 meters. This meant Shannon had a run a 'catch-up' race rather than the pacings and tactics originally planned. The games committee meet, argued and declined to re-run the event, instead 'adjusting' the times of those athletes affected. Though her adjusted time places her 4th or perhaps 5th, Shannon was 'awarded' a tie for 6th place. A disappointing performance by State officials, still a great medal finish for Shannon to top off her best indoor season.
