Meet Summaries

Girls: A shake-down meet for the girls, with athletes getting reacquainted with running the tight 200m oval and cramped quarters for jumps and throws. The team's meet management was excellent, with all competitors reporting on time. Mishaps were endured, however, as a fall in the first leg of the 4x200 cost that relay valuable seconds and the girls 4x800 was headed to a scoring performance until DQ'd for a exchange lane infraction. Live and learn. The team takes the experience and prepares for next week's meet at Hamilton College.

Boys: Like the girls, the boys team did a fine job of meet management and used the contest to gauge progress and determine improvement needed. There are some. Polishing hand-off prior to their next relay meet on December 28 will be a must. Ironically, the boys 4x800 was also DQ'd for a exchange lane infraction that cost them a top-6 finish. But good experiences one way or the other were the order of the day. The team's highlight was probably a winning 4x1600 relay. The outcome was hardly in doubt as Billy Gabriel, John DeLallo and Martin Leff went 1-2-3 in that event were individual times are added to determine a 'relay' time. Matt Byrnes placed 13th individually to complete the Wildcat score. Gabriel's and DeLallo's times are the section's best.

Meet Summaries

Girls: The girls continued to mix and move athletes in order to create competitive experiences. Some of the athletes enjoyed improvements in their featured event; others tested themselves with first or new events. That will be typical in this shortened and compressed 2010-11 season. Despite all the experimentation, the girls had four top-6 scoring relays and a near-miss 7th in the 2-person high hurdle relay. Top performances came from Kelly Powell, who placed 2nd overall in the 600 meter and met the Open Qualifier standard, and Lindsay Weaver, with her first-ever individual 8th place effort in the 1000 meter. Meet highlight for the girls was provided by Laura Leff. In the 3000 meter, she battled CNS ace Maria Lamontage all the way to the finish, placing second by 1.5 seconds. Laura's time of 10:09.31 shattered Elizabeth McMahon's 2006-07 record, which stood at 10:22.56. Importantly, Laura met the third-qualifier standard for State Championship qualification, and her time is currently #2 in New York State.

Boys: It was a relatively 'flat' day for the boys who, due to team size and limited meet events, had a sizable portion of the team sitting this one out. They did muster three scoring 2-person relays, however, and provided meet experiences for many who sat out the team's first meet. PR's, for those repeating field or running events, were harder to come by. Best relay finish for the boys came from the 1000m duo of Mark Reilly and Matt Byrnes, who placed 3rd. The pole vault tandem of Chris Piccioni and Peter James again scored, this time 5th. Traditional relays return for the team at the 12/28 Kirschenheiter Relays to be held at SUNY Cortland.

Meet Summaries

Girls: The improvements continued as the team travelled south again to Lusk Field House on the SUNY Cortland campus for the Constantino Memorial Invitational. The girls earned five scoring events in this meet, all propelled by improving performances. Scoring for the 'cats were the 55hh Relay(5th), the 4x800(2nd), the 4x1500(5th) and the 2-person Triple Jump Relay(4th). A first place effort went to the SMR squad of Amy Hannahan(600m), Allison Iles(200m), Kelly Powell(400m) and Laura Leff(800m). The team now trains for its too-early league championship on January 8th.

Boys: Results for the boys were mixed. Field event athletes either struggled to match previous performances or slipped slightly, though the team registered two top-6 finishes. Many middle-distance runners were entered in relays for the first time, and a number of these athletes came in at or under target. The meet highlight was provided by the final track event, the 4x1600m. For a second time, the Wildcats ran away with this event, out-legging 2nd place F-M by 32 seconds. John DeLallo took the lead from teammate Billy Gabriel after lap 2 and opened a wide gap on the field by the 800m mark. That gap never shrank as DeLallo took individual honors with a section-leading 4:21.41 effort which also broke a WG record dating back to 1973. Gabriel finished 4th, followed by Martin Leff in 5th. Matt Byrnes completed the West Genny effort with 14th place. The squad, however, were unable to meet a qualifying mark for the national championship 4x1mile. The team now preps for their league championship.

Meet Summaries

Girls: The team split between meets to afford more competitive opportunities in this in this 'meet-challenged' season. Both squads had good days, with a number of personal records and under-target efforts. The 'cats had sixteen scoring individuals or relays in the meet, with Abby Uczen, Bri Richardson and Emily Frazee involved in three scoring events. Double scorers were Mary McGlynn, Emily Iles, Lauren Brieant and Morgan Farmer. Further south, the Cornell squad took to the Barton Hall oval in large invitational fiels. Top-20 finishes came for Abby Kastick(11th) and Lindsay Weaver(18th) in the 3000 meter, 9th for the Kelly Powell in the 600 meter, and 7th for the 4x800 relay of Laura Leff, Powell, Kastick and Amy Hannahan. The most unusual race of the day was also produced the highest finish. Leff led the 1500m meter field from lap 2 on to win that event in a section-leading 4:45.42. However, because of finish-line management problems with runners Laura had lapped, she was never given the last-lap bell and assumed two left. She actually ran a 1700, with her finish surge/sprint applied to the extra lap, probably robbing her of several seconds. Fortunately, the timers were able to recover her 'enroute' time. The athletes now prep for their final invitational of the season on January 16th.

Boys: Like the girls, the boys' team was split, and, like the boys, both squads enjoyed some excellent performances. At Colgate and the CNYCL Championship, Tony Terzolo was a triple scorer for the cats. Double-score efforts came from Ethan Osborne, Will Johnson, Luke Potash, Nate Conroy and Mark Reilly. Many of these athletes and others enjoyed personal records and below-target performances. At Cornell, it was quite a day for the 'cats. Billy Gabriel, though slightly sick, shrugged that off and blasted to a 9:34.98 3rd place 3200m time, the best in the section to date and a state top-5 time. Martin Leff added a 6th place, nearly setting a personal record. Matt Serrao added another top-20 finish in that event. Both 1600m runners had top-20 finishes, with Matt Byrnes placing 11th and Matt Gonnella 20th. Next up was John DeLallo in the 1000th. Locked in an incredible, fun-to-watch three runners placed within .19 seconds and all went under 2:30. John wound up third in 1:29.97, which eclipsed a record dating back to 1984. That is a current section-leading time and also state top-5. In their last event of the day, the 4x800, DeLallo took the opening leg and by the time he handed off, West Genny had a 40-50 meter lead. He, Leff, Byrnes and Gabriel were never challenged and went on to win in 8:12.89, which is another section-leading time. So, bunches of PR's, scoring efforts and three section-leading performances. Not a bad day for the Wildcats.

Meet Summaries

Girls: The team headed south for its final invitational of the season and the last competitive opportunities for a number of team members. With the meet scored as a 'relay meet,' the girls registered four top-six performances. Meet highlights included PR's for a number of athletes and a section-leading 1000m by Laura Leff . The sectional team now trains for their championship next week.

Boys:  With their final meet of the season, the boys mixed up the roster but came away with seven top-6  two-person relay efforts. Peter James and Chris Picionni both notched pole vault PR's for third. Matt Byrnes and Matt Gonnella did likewise in the 1000m for 2nd. Another second place by Billy Gabriel and Martin Leff were also all-time PR efforts, with Gabriel's 4:18.55 as a top USA time. Those 1600m times made possible qualification for the New Balance National Championship 4x1mile Relay. Team members now gear for Sectionals.

Meet Summary

A fourteen member squad rolled down the thruway to the Hamilton College Field House for their final team competition of the season. Eleven top-6 efforts kept the team in the running for a top-5 finish, their team goal. The top individual effort was John DeLallo's 2nd place in the 1000m. Billy Gabriel contributed a third in the 1600m before the 4x800 relay of DeLallo, Gabriel, Martin Leff and Matt Byrnes dominated the race in route to a sectional championship, WG's first in that event for over a decade.

Meet Summary

The girls took the long bus ride to Hamilton, one interrupted only by a stop to assist the Baldwinsville team bus pulled over due to a smoky heater. Both teams arrived for the Saturday evening sectional competition without further incident. The only drama came on the track. Abby Kastick notched a seasonal PR with a 6th place 3000m finish before the 4x400 relay of Kelly Powell, Amy Hannahan, Emily Iles and Allison Iles ran to 3rd place out of the slow heat with a nifty 4:25.17 effort built on three PR times. Following a disappointing 1000m result, Laura Leff took the track for the 1500m and wound up in a show-down with F-M ace Jillian Fanning. The two separated from the field and battled lap after lap. Laura surged to a slight lead off the final turn but was outsprinted by a determined Fanning. Leff's 4:43.21, however was a new WG record and the #6 time in USA this season. She heads to NYC this coming weekend to compete in the New Balance Collegiate Invitational Jr. 1000m.

Meet: New Balance Collegiate Invitational, 2/4, Armory Track & Field Center, NYC

Meet Summaries

John DeLallo and Laura Leff accepted invitations to compete in the New Balance Collegiate Invitational Jr. 1000m events. Both joined the festival of superbly conditioned bodies that is an Armory Track & Field Center meet, in this case, predominately college athletes. Laura took the track first in her elite field of eastern scholastic 1000 meter runners. Laura took the bold route, surging off the line and locking into 2nd place, which she held until lap four. She dropped a few places to older, stronger competitors and finished 7th. Her school-record 2:55.41 is a section-leading, national top-10 time. In route, Laura ran her unofficial fastest 600m(1:42.9 and 800m(2:19.5) splits. John was next, taking the gun slightly before 7:00pm. A slow start put John at the end of the pack. He worked back into the pack, but did not run his fastest splits until laps 4&5. By then, the race had got away from him, though he clocked his second-best effort of the season and placed 8th in the 10 runner field. Both now focus of preparations for their 2/26th Open Qualifier meet.

Meet Summaries

Boys: The boys sent a larger than usual contingent to this year's Open Qualifier, including three relays. All individuals and relays came home with personal records for the season, a nice cap to a long and challenging season. The 4x400 of Luke Potash, John Alden, Pete Richardson and Tony Terzolo placed 3rd with a season-best 3:39.26. The 4x200 relay of Terzolo, Frank Misco, Alden and Potash also clocked a season best as they finished 6th in 1:38.65. John DeLallo ran the #2 USA 1000m as he battled to 2nd behind national-leading Zvon Watkins of Liverpool and punched his ticket to the State Championship. And Billy Gabriel shook off several early lap challenges to win the 1600m going away in a school-record clocking of 4:18.45. He advances to states. Finally, it's been a very, very long time since the Wildcats have sent a relay to the State Championship. That changed on the Colgate track as the 4x800 relay of Mark Reilly, DeLallo, Matt Byrnes and Gabriel powered ahead of all others to take the tape in 8:10.96 and move on to Cornell.

Girls: The girls 4x400 relay could hardly believe their eyes. All other leading contenders had decided to pull out of the 4x400 contest and WG found itself seeded #1, looking at the possibility of 'going states.' But opportunity is seldom a present, and on this night someone else wanted it more. The 'cats squad of Kelly Powell, Amy Hannahan, Emily Iles and Allison Iles were nipped by New Hartford, placing second with their season's best of 4:24.85, and left to ponder what might have been. Laura Leff created her own opportunity again as she ran a 2:56.81 1000m to place second and move on to states. Pride propelled the 4x800 relay group of Lindsay Weaver, Powell, Leff and Abby Kastick as they clocked their season's best of 10:16.00 and took 4th.
