Meet Summary

Both Wildcats teams had the challenge of opening their competitive seasons on the home course of the #1 state-ranked boys/girls F-M teams. Despite many solid performances and excellent improvements over their 8/30 home course time trial, the outcomes were not in doubt. The Hornets dominated both races, but offered instructive glimpses of what high-quality racing looks like. These were positive step-1's for both Wildcat teams.

 Strong Performances

Boys: Matt Bartolotta took on two of the state's top-5 pre-ranked Class A runners and beat one of them, finishing close to a second. Peter McMahon's 5th place gave a a strong indication he can be one of the section's--and state's--top 9th graders this season.

Girls: Hannah Craybas opened the season with the third-fastest per/mile clocking of her running career as she led the team. Natalie Buckhout equaled Hannah's feat. Both raced top-11 finishes against the #2 nationally ranked Hornets and are set for accomplished seasons.

Meet Summaries

The rain stayed away, but the VVS course was its usual tough-but-fair, demanding all the skills of any cross-country runner in order to 'master the effort.' That's what the Wildcats wanted to do--master their efforts. Most succeeded, enough so that both varsity teams won their #3 races, though the girls race experience some unexpected drama as front runners(no WG'er) ran off course at race's end and were disqualified. The boys needed no dramatics as Matt Bartolotta and Peter Mcmahon went 1-2 to drive the 'cats to outscore the second place team by 64 points. With multiple races, however, appearances can be deceiving. Both teams placed 9th in the total meet merge and put that first-invitational experience behind them.

Strong Performances

Boys: With excellent summer miles 'in the bank,' Aidan Walsh has been demonstrating the positive effects of that sacrifice, and this race was evidence of the payoff. The team will welcome more of his summer investment in the months ahead. Also, a strong freshman debut by Ewan Moran resulted in that essential 5th runner spot for the team.

Girls: As a 'fast-twitch' runner seeking to stretch her competitive track distance, Abby Kuppinger has made steady progress with the trail miles, and on this day was an important #4 runner for the team, a strong start to her invitational season and a solid team contribution.

Meet Summary

Though the threat of thunderstorms was removed from the day, higher temperatures and humidity affected some runners. Then too, the team had been pushing the miles earlier in the week also. It did not help on the boys side to lose a top runner barely a mile into the race. Several others had 'off' days, so the 2-4 finishes of Matt Bartolotta and Peter McMahon could not be used to fashion a hoped for upset of either competitor. The girls were able to best Baldwinsville on their home course but ran into a talented CNS team that put in the summer miles, which showed. Still, three quarters of the teams posted their fastest 5k's of the young season and just need to keep working hard.

Outstanding Performances

Boys: It was no secret that Peter McMahon was poised for a solid first-season at the varsity level, though freshman are not typicallly expected to play big roles but rather learn and prepare for future contributions. Peter outraces all but two Baldwinsville Bees and his teammate Matt in posting the Section's fastest freshman 5k and the 2nd fastest freshman 5k in the state to date. Nice opening. And Sam Mosher clocked his all-time 5k best as he continues to climb up the team depth chart.

Girls: New to the sport, but with the potential to become a top team/sectional XC performer, Lauren Puchta is still learning the ropes of managing a hard 5k effort. She lopped almost fifty seconds off a previous 5k PR and seems on the way to a strong season and a vital role on the team.

Meet Summary

The Wildcats were challenged by the presencesof two state top-20 Liverpool teams. The #5 Liverpool girls team proved their rank as they swept the top five spots, despite course personal records by several 'cats. For the ladies, it was an up-close look at a very good NY team. On the boys side, top-4 finishes by Matt Bartolotta and Peter McMahon, but Liverpool captured eight of the #5-#14 spots to captured the win.

 Solid Performances

Boys: Going into the course's Outer Loop, Matt Bartolotta trailed Liverpool's top two racers. He was biding his time, because coming out of the Inner Loop and over two miles into the race, Bartolotta had a twenty meter lead that he never reliqueshed in route to the #15 all-time clocking on the WG home course. Personal home course PR's by Justin Malinowski, Zach Quinn and Sam Mosher indicated improving fitness.

Girls: Two talented lead-runners and a strong following pack presented a strong Liverpool challenge for the 'cats. The only runners to break into the Liverpool jaugernaut were Hannah Craybas and Natalie Buckhout, both who raced personal bests on their home course.

Meet Summaries

Summer seemed intent going out in style, so warm temperatures and piercing sunshine with only intermittent cooling breezes affected some runners more than others. Many of the athletes attempted subtle changes in their race strategies, and for most those changes worked. Both varsity teams registered improving performances, though that 'total team effort' alluded both. The season is still young.

 Solid Performances

Boys: As the top freshman in the 468 runner total meet merge, Peter McMahon continued to prove he's one of the best 9th graders in the state with his 18th place overall finish. And there's another freshman Wildcat making moves. Ewan Moran raced in the 4th spot for the 'cats with arguably his best effort of the season. With three underclassmen in their top-4 who are gaining in experience and race savy, the season should just get better for the Wildcats.

Girls: The girls squad continues to tighten its #1-5 team compression--and that's a great development because close racing lends to their strength this year. Natalie Buckhout chanced a slightly faster start, and it paid dividends as she raced her best speed rating of the season and notched a #18 place in a competitive crowd. She also finished 25th in the overall 358 runner meet field. Libby Morey also logged her best effort so far and indicated she will be very valuable to her team and teammates from here on out. One of the best efforts of the day, however, came from Eva Murphy. In her JV race, she had her right shoe clipped off by a competitor in the first half of the race, but she kept going and not only finished but registered her fastest per/mile time of the season.

Meet Summary

The athletes enjoyed a pristine early-fall day for their annual Senior Day and the final contest of the SCAC dual-meet schedule. Both team dominated in their races against Henninger. Nottingham could not show due a transporation glitch, so that contest will be scored from the SCAC Championship. The girls' front six enjoyed a day of 'pack-running,' with separation only over the final meters as they swept the first 9 places. The boys took 9 of the first 10 places for an equally impressive showing. Course times were not the objective. This was a 'tweener' race, with the hot-weather Baldwinsville Invitational behind them and McQuaid ahead. Well managed efforts and mental preparation for Saturday's contest were. The season now moves into it's invitational/championship October stretch.

 Solid Performances

Boys:  The team needed strong efforts as set up for the McQuaid meet--and the athletes delivered. It was a good team day race.

Girls: Packrunning was the order of the day for the girls top runners, and they powered the course together until the final stretch. Times were surprisingly close to their all-out efforts the week before against state top-10 Liverpool.

Meet Summaries

Three of the four team races were spared any rain. Race conditions were good, and both varsity squads competing in their large schools seeded races, so competition was fierce. Both team gave maximum efforts and several athletes came home with course personal bests. They now going into a well-timed competition break with no races until October 11th. Following an 'aerobic refresh' week, the emphasis will shift toward race-specific work.

 Solid Performances

Boys: Three performances stood out for the boys this day. Matt Bartolotta pushed himself high up on the WG all-time McQuaid performances as he raced the 6th fastest to place 9th in his seeded race. In another strong effort, Ewan Moran pushed up into the team #3 spot while Sam Mosher was the JV squad leader with one of his best efforts of the year.

Girls: Racing in her third McQuaid, Natalie Buckout registered her personal best with a top-50 finish as she continues to strengthen into the season.  Lauren Puchta was a strong #2 for the Wildcats and continues to rise in the team depth chart.

Meet Summaries

A slow drive through beautiful Fall countryside brought the Wildcats too late to the Newark Valley meet site for the first time ever. Up first, the girls team had to scramble, taking the line with a shortened warm-up and little knowledge of the 5k course. No problem for the girls as they powered their way to a victory in the Large Schools division. Two of the top-5 raced all-time PR's. The boys also had a great day, placing 2nd in the entire large/small school field. Glorious autumn weather simply provided the capping element to the day.

Outstanding Performances

Boys: Peter McMahon cemented his status as one of the state's strongest freshman with a podium 6th place finish and his fastest 5k time of the season.

Girls: Natalie Buckhout made it clear early in the race that she was going all out, moving up to the top-six in mid-race and ultimately securing that position for a podium finish and. like Peter, her fastest 5k ever.

Meet Summaries

The competititve day at Marathon began wrapped in a dense cool fog. The sun slowly did its work and most of the Wildcat races enjoyed sunshine, slight breezes and spectacular fall views across the valley. Both teams, due to PSAT's and gone-runners, were short-handed, but a surprising number of PR's resulted from races on this tough 5k course where the 'cats had only five on the line and so "every runner mattered." The teams ended their invitational seasons the way they wanted to--with all-out efforts.

Outstanding Performances

Boys: Big individual efforts were the order of the day for the boys. Connor Moore loped an impressive 20 seconds off his PR to run the team's 5th fastest time. Ewan Moore got in that act with a 15 second PR of his own. But none could top the monster 2 minute PR laid down by Micheal Jocz. Up front, Peter McMahon was locked into a podium battle for 6th place when he decided no way and surged the late field trails to take that spot and earn the meet's Top Freshman Award for boys.  And into the final 800 meters, Matt Bartolotta was in danger of being gapped by his Watkins Glen competitor, who led the race. Matt went strategic, powering the corners on his trail sections, and he won by the individual title by ten seconds.

Girls: The girls needed best individual efforts to race competitively as a team, and they got those from several team members. Abby Kuppinger raced a seasonal best on the Marathon hills. Sofia Lentz laid down an impressive minute and a half PR, while Claire MacMullen trimmed 20 seconds off her previous best 5k.
