Meet Summaries

Boys:  Despite a lot of good summer/early-season training, these Wildcats were caught off-guard by a hard-charging and game RFA top-3. The RFA game plan was obvious and simple. With the 'cats top runner, Martin Leff, on the sidelines, RFA went for a 1-2-3 finish and an automatic win. They almost pulled it off. Sophomore Nate Conroy, however, thwarted that plan with a third place, creating a 29-29 tie that WG won in the tie-breaker where RFA's 6th man was back in 25th place. Despite many excellent efforts by non-scoring team members, the meet clearly demonstrated the top runners were not mentally prepared for a feisty 5k. That will need to change by Saturday and the VVS Invitational.

Girls: The girls took care of business in business-like fashion for their opening effort. They set the tone quickly and, behind the 1-2-3 automatic win finish of Laura Leff, Lindsey Weaver and Abby Kastick, swept to victory. A number of 'cats registered 5k personal records, but tough races lie ahead.

Meet Summaries

Boys: The regrouped boys squad, with Martin Leff back in action, definitely put forth an improved team performance on a cloudy, cool but calm VVS morning race. The top runners are beginning to show consistency in racing, both in preparation and execution. Though a long way from their potential, the signs point toward steady improvements. In the JV ranks, runners are making their presences felt as they move up the depth chart. Dan Gabriel continues to climb while Will Randall and Matt Romano ran 'statement races' that they too could be varsity contenders in the weeks ahead.

Girls: Without #2 Anna Leo, who is nursing a calf muscle strain, the girls had to dig deep for a top-team performance. And they did. Up front, it was all Laura Leff. Facing a formidable front duo from North Shore(Samantha Nadel/Brianna Nerud), both top national runners, Laura charged to the front and never looked back, finishing with the meet's second-fastest time, four seconds behind Julian Fanning of F-M who set the course record in the Varsity I race. Lindsay Weaver's 12th place was a signal she will be a vital team player this season. Kelly Powell's top-20 third place for the team is another good team sign but the biggest noise was made by Lauren Brieant, who ran 35th as the 'cats critical 5th runners. Her continued development will determine the extent of the team's improvement in the season ahead. Elise Dunshee, another freshman prospect, also ran well, indicating she can be a future player for varsity honors.

Meet Summaries

Boys:   This was a take-care-of-business day, and the Wildcats did just that. Bolstered by the dual-meet return of lead runner Martin Leff, the boys packed in around the C-Square lead runners to take six of the top eight spots with solid races. In workman fashion, they ran tight and determined on the Central Square 5k course that may be a bit longer than 5k.

Girls: Laura Leff had only a few good options about how to approach this race where she would not be challenged. With no looming invitational, she chose to attack it and, save a late-race stomach stitch, might have clipped the course record set by F-M's Courtney Chapman in a 2009 league championship. Her remarkable start-to-finish solo effort was only nine seconds off and led a phalanx of Wildcats broken only by Central Square in the three position. Kelly Powell continued to improve as she led the 'cats pack and won an exciting finish dual with her 400 meter footspeed.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  A front battle with Auburn's excellent lead runner did not materialize due to illness, so the Wildcats resorted to pack-running and took 8 of the top 10 spots--and a 1-2-3 finish behind Martin Leff, Jack Erhard and Nate Conroy--for the victory on their home course. Slightly soggy and sometimes slimy course conditions under cloudy skies did not provide top race conditions, but the efforts were sufficient to the day. The team now gears for a very important McQuaid Invitational and a seeded boys race.

Girls: West Genesee simply had too much foot-speed for the Auburn on this day as they captured eleven of the top  twelve spots for a convincing victory. The 'cats ran with control and a solid 2-5 gap with the continuing development of freshman Elise Dunshee. Like the boys, Saturday looms large as they head down the NYS Thruway to Rochester and a packed elite field in the girls seeded race.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  On the varsity team level, it was not a very good day. Weather and trail conditions affected the runners more than it should have, as these Wildcats train mud and should be competent 'mudders.' But the varsity team as a whole failed to respond to the deep and powerful field in their seeded race. A commendable 38.4 #1-5 gap was lost to the fact that the entire team ran too far back in the race pack. They will need to re-group with more resolve in their 10/9 Manhattan race. The JV team was a different story. Maybe they are drinking different water, but they registered the best team finish of the day and two--Matt Romano and Dan Gabriel--bested varsity top-7 times.

Girls: The girls varsity suffered the same fate as their boys counterparts. Their team effort was mediocre at best as several runners did not respond to their big meet venue. One of those was not Laura Leff. Laura challenged both mud and competitors--and best both as she ran the fastest girls time of the meet to take home the coveted Victory Cup Award. Her muddy-trail 17:13.1 was still a course top-15 time, and Laura is running some of the best girls XC in the state at this time. Like the boys, the girls JV team rose to the occasion, racing to 4th place in their 29-team field. And, like the boys, they challenged varsity times. Alycia Andolina registered probably the best race of her Wildcat career as she ran the 4th fastest WG girls time of the meet in placing 12th. Also making moves up team depth chart with strong races were Nicole Paone and Emily Lynch. Following a dual meet at Oswego, the girls now look ahead to the Manhattan Invitational.

Boys:  The boys took care of business on a beautiful mid-fall day, capturing the first fourteen places as they prepare for an important Manhattan effort.

Girls: Following the boy's lead, the girls dominated the scoring, as they took the opening gun at sunset and put the first eight girls across the line, led by Laura Leff's course record time. The girls now turn their attention to a looming Manhattan Eastern States challenge.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  It was a disappointing team effort in an important 'big' meet. Only three of the top-7 runners ran PR's. Blame it on the summer temperatures(85o) if you want, but all teams dealt with the same conditions. Blame it on the multiple races in the past two weeks, but in the JV Boys "E" race, every returning runner PR'd. Only 1st year runner Will Randall was not a returning runner--and he won the race as the JV boys came home with a trophy. Big kudos to those guys. Other boys JV teams also performed well, leaving the question open about what the varsity seven needs to adjust in the coming weeks as championships loom.

Girls: Laura Leff had an off day at the wrong time, but still ran a top-10 finish in a deep Eastern's field while logging a PR. Six of the seven returning runners in the girls Varsity race registered personal records, signaling what could be a tightening of this team as they look toward the season's homestretch for many.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  What do you do when facing the state-leading F-M Hornets without your #2 runner? You go out and find someone to race. With the WG home course in the best condition it's been in the past two seasons, and the chances of an upset slim, the 'cats "just raced." Multiple personal records was the result of the perfect racing circumstances--and a grateful end to a stretch of five races in two weeks. The boys ended their dual meet schedule at 2nd place in the American Division and with a 4-1 record for their 5th consecutive winning season.

Girls: The defending national champion F-M Hornets dominated the scoring everywhere except at the top where Laura Leff sped to a new course, shattering her own 2010 mark by over a minute. Like the boys, the girls used their superior competitors to push themselves to multiple personal records. And like the boys, the girls also finished 2nd in their American Division with a 4-1 record, their 15th winning season since 1994.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  A fast start by the state-leading F-M Hornets put the Wildcats on their heels in the first mile. They re-grouped and ran a hard second half to establish many course personal records. In the second act, a boys JV squad led by Will Randall took it out hard and outlegged their F-M counterparts to score the only race win of the meet for WG. As the steam eason winds down, the 'cats will be pressed this coming weekend to prove their top-20 capability at the Marathon Invitational.

Girls:  Without their top runner, the girls faced the F-M juggernaut with solid performances. Six of the varsity squad ran personal records, some substantial. More improvements will be needed at their coming Marathon Invitational as the #23 cats seek to move higher in state standings.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  The boys team, to their credit, cobbled together a top-5 finish in a strange race where "B" teams dominated an  "A" top-20 team and WG ran with a rearrangement of finishers. Top-5 runners Ethan Osborne and Jack Erhard struggled while senior Tim Sprague stepped up for probably his best 5k as a Wildcat while the fourth-best Wildcat effort of the day was clocked in the unseeded race by Will Randall, who's time made him best freshman of the meet. Martin Leff, after battling up in the top-5 for most of the race, fell off at the finish. Despite all that, 7 of the 8 clocked course PR's, and they ran close to a strong Marcellus team that the week before had claimed the merge at the Chittenango Invitational. But if programs are built from the bottom up, then this team should be excited for 2012 because the unseeded(2nd) and JV(1st) squads were impressive. On to sectionals....

Girls: Almost that total team effort that could have won the meet. It was a gutsy effort by the 'cats for a solid 2nd place effort against top-20 Elmira. The girls put their top-4 in the top-25 but then had to wait twenty-two places for #5--and that cost them. Despite the sloppy or sometimes downright muddy conditions, Laura Leff came within two seconds of the course record and might have had it but for a minor off-course problem. And the team scored their best cumulative time in four years. Course PR's were abundant and entertaining drama came from the JV squad. After watching a horde of Ithaca runners pack the top-10 in the first mile, the Wildcats methodically picked off fatiguing competitors and wound up dominating the race, with their top seven finishing in the top-15, including a 2-3-4-5 barrage. Like the boys, this bodes well for 2012.

Boys:  Led by the seasonal PR's efforts of Martin Leff and Ethan Osborne, the boys had most everyone in place for their best team performance of the year--and at the right time.  They ended the team season with experienced runners(Nate Conroy/Mike Lannon/Will Randall/Jack Erhard) in place to take over next year and built on this season's successes. Leff advances to the State Championship following his best race as a Wildcat harrier, a monster 4th place in a strong field, the best WG individual finish since 2008.

Girls: The girls also put forth their best team effort of the season, outrunning predictions and chasing #5 state-ranked CNS. Laura Leff ran a smart controlled race to place second overall and advance to the State Championship. A gutsy performance by Lindsay Weaver fell one place short of a states qualification while Abby Kastick was two tenths off a season PR. Kelly Powell battled for a team 5th place while Alycia Andolina ran an all-time PR for a critical team #4 top-30 place. All the girls scorers earned All-League honors, and they can cheer Laura on while making plans for 2012.

Meet Summary

Girls: On a muddy course dampened by snow the day before, Laura Leff continued a solid season with a second place states finish, the best-ever by a Wildcat. Laura got out strong, but was no match for a determined Jillian Fanning of F-M, who opened a 150 meter gap on Laura at the 2 mile gap and ran the meets only sub 19:00 time. Laura, though, wound up the #1 individual seed for the Federation Championship.

Boys: Martin followed up a strong sectional championship finish with a determined states effort. He drove to 27th place individually on the cold first-race course, finding the third mile by far the toughest. His 55th merge place, however, propelled him forward to the Federation Championship, his fourth consecutive appearance for the Wildcats.

Meet: NYS Federation Championship, Bowdoin Park, 11/19/11

Meet Summary

Girls: Qualifying as the #1 seeded individual runner, Laura Leff accepted the challenge, taking the lead and holding it until the 2 mile mark when rival Mary Cain(running for the Bronxville team) took over and powered to the win, with Laura second. Laura's was the best WG individual finish ever for a Federation Championship and set her up nicely for the Footlocker NE Qualifier race on 11/26.

Boys: Martin made it a family affair at Feds and did his part with a medal finish at 26th place. This was Martin's 4th consecutive trip to the championship; the previous three were with qualified teams. This 2011 edition was a terrific, gutsy effort by Martin, who has seen his Feds times impressively drop from 18:57.5 as a freshman to 16:33.5 this race. He ends his season--and Wildcat XC 'career' on a high note.

Meet:  Footlocker Northeast Qualifier Meet, 11/26/11

Meet Summary

Girls:  Brilliant late November weather on the Sunken Meadows 5k course tested Laura Leff's determination to become West Genesee's first-ever Footlocker National Championship qualifier. Laura took it out hard, leading the race through its mid-stage. Cardiac Hill, however, provided a stiff challenge. Laura was overtaken off the hill but battled to a fifth place finish, punching her ticket to San Diego and the national championship.

Meet Summary

Girls: As indoor track runners geared up for their first contest in early December, Laura Leff extended a cross-country season into its seventh month. Following all the festivities provided by the Footlocker company, forty elite US girls runners assembled at San Diego's Balboa Park for their morning championship race. Laura adopted a different strategy for this race, planning to maintain a conservative pace and a top-20 place for the first of the course's two loops, then work as far up as possible in the second loop. The goal: a top 15 finish and All-American status.  The strategy worked well and played into the use of the course's topography. Key to the race is the steep hill in the back section, further complicated by a long carry-over. Laura went up the hill the first loop in 18th. She came down in 9th. Over the lower loop, she jockeyed for position and  returned to the hill in 10th. Then, with an extraordinary effort she passed seven runners on the carry-over section and came down the hill in third. With a gutsy final 600 meters, Laura held her position for a personal best 17:33.9 finish. Her third place is the highest Footlocker finish ever by a Section III runner.  It put a stamp on her emergence as one of the country's top XC runners.
