Meet Summaries

Boys:  It was a good preliminary invitational outing for the boys. They ran the kind of race they'd been trained for so far, going out smartly, building through the middle mile and finishing strong. Second only to CNS by 7 points with a top-5 five runner on the sidelines, the they know a solid season lies ahead. The JV race offered further evidence of a good season ahead as they placed five in the top-12 including a big step-up performance by first-year runner Mark Reilly. All systems will be go for next Saturday's Chittenango Invitational.

Girls: This team entered the meet with some unanswered questions. With top runner Katie Bott temporarily on the sidelines, the rest stepped it up and answered the call as they girls defeated rival CNS to bring home the big trophy. As with the boys, the day is best described as an all-out team effort. The girls opened conservatively, as planned, then proceeded to reel in their CNS competitors who had gone out hard. Only Laura Leff established herself as a front runner from the gun(as planned), where she dualed with CNS freshman ace, Nicole Watterud(10:30 3000m as an 8th grader), survived a wrong turn and powered home to win individual honors by a full ten seconds. What a debut for the diminutive but feisty and talented 8th grader. The girls JV race included just a bunch of absurdly incredible improvements by front-runners(1 to 2 minutes) on times they had established only three days earlier in their dual meet. With lots of work still to be done, this was a great way to start.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  The boys handled the business of the day, taking themselves out smartly, then working the middle mile to set up a solid final mile and a 1-5 finish. It was a disciplined pace by front-runners Reedy, Gabriel and Houghmaster, with Gonnella and Leff coming on strong at the end. The boys now enjoy a 2 -0 dual meet start to the season.

Girls: Following their game plan almost to perfection, the girls duplicated the boys' effort with a 1-5 finish that required a little heroics from surprising Kelly Powell. Powell, the #11 runner from the 2008 squad, has zoomed into the top echelon of this year's team with much improved performances. Eighty meters off the #1 Auburn runner with a mile to go, Kelly 'notched up,' caught her opponent with 300 meters to go and powered away at the finish. Also making a statement for herself is junior Jessica Emanuelli, who finished 8th for the team. The season will be a work in progress for this group, but the work so far has been encouraging.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  The boys were treated to an eye-opener by a fine Baldwinsville performance, whose team put three runners ahead of Wildcat leader Billy Gabriel. B-ville won the #2 race and finished #1 in the meet merge while the 'cats came in 2nd and 5th in the overall merge.  But the team ran well, with a number of personal records  and athletes meeting their seasonal 5k performance goals early. Scorers Martin Leff and John DeLallo had outstanding races. Those who met their performance goals will have to 'adjust' expectations upward as the team now enjoys a long stretch of training with only one dual meet prior to their trip west to Rochester's McQuaid Invitational.

Girls: The girls were nipped by Tully 56 - 58 in their #2 race as they placed 4th in their meet merge, but they registered the fastest team time(100:56.3) and average runner time(20:11.3) of all 56 entered teams. A lost shoe to Kelly Powell as she was running well in the #5 team position spoiled a potentially excellent individual effort and dropped her out of the team scoring. That hurt team scoring. 8th grader Laura Leff remained undefeated on the young season. She simply ran away from the field, clocking the best WG time ever on the Jamesville Beach 5k championship course(18:26.9) and the third fastest of the meet behind state-class runners Allison Lasnicki of Canastota and Christine Driscoll of Geneva, who locked up in a dual in the #4 race. Katie Bott returned from a knee injury to run her best Jamesville course time(20:12.3), followed closely by freshman Anna Leo(20:28.8) and Abby Kastick(20:33.8). A young and building team, they will have time to double-knot and check those shoe laces as they train in preparation for the McQuaid Invitational.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  On their tough home course, the boys continued to roll, capturing the first seven places to 'pitch' a XC shut-out against both Nottingham and Corcoran. With their 1-5 gap under control and closing, they train for the McQuaid Invitational on October 3rd.

Girls: Laura Leff took the green light and led start to finish with a wide lead and the course her only adversary as she demolished the previous course record by almost 40 seconds with her 19:20.7 clocking. Despite missing runners, the Wildcats put the first four across the finish line and seven of the top ten for automatic wins. Like the boys, the girls now turn to training in preparation for the McQuaid Invitational.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  A solid step forward for the boys, who improved their team cumulative time by over 2 minutes. Four of the scoring five ran WG top-10 McQuaid times. In the important merge of all seeded races, the 'cats stayed solid, placing 5th and beating significant Class A and B teams. The team is building....

Girls: The day was a team disaster. Top runner Katie Bott, fighting injury, was unable to race at full force and did not score for the team. Laura Leff, racing in 2nd place at the 800 meter mark, had to drop out. Several other struggles and that 'was all she wrote.' They will try to regroup this week in preparation for Manhattan.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  On arrival and with a 'high winds advisory' in effect, the 'cats found the trails of the upper course at the Oswego site had been closed due to downed trees and limbs. A hastily constructed course on the lower playing fields exposed them to the full force of the winds for 80% of the race. No matter. The boys disregarded an 'off-course' adventure for the top-8 leaders on the ill-defined 2.something race circuit to sweep to victory. At least the rain held off. They move on to Manhattan and hoped for improved weather.

Girls: Contending with identical weather, the girls got down to business and shook off a strong challenge by the #1 Oswego runner. Laura Leff, Anna Leo and Abby Kastick went 1-2-3 for the automatic win, with Alex Incaudo and Katie Riley completing the scoring as the Wildcats placed 7 of the first 10 runners across the windy finish line. They look to get back to invitational form at Manhattan.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  Over twenty years have passed since a West Genesee boys team came home from Manhattan with 'the big trophy. Going in, the boys knew they faced stiff competition from top New Jersey(Shawnee) and Massachusetts(Lowell) teams. What they did not know was that those two teams' jerseys were very similar, and through the finish chute, it appeared that Shawnee's front runners had done their expected job with step-up help from their #4-5 runners. The boys walked away thinking they'd placed 2nd. A phone call from the finish by parent Kevin Reedy corrected the visual error. It was a 68-71 victory for the boys over Lowell, not Shawnee, who placed 3rd. The 'cats overcame an off day by Sam Reedy to with with solid front efforts by Steve Houghmaster and Billy Gabriel, as well as a 39 second 1-5 gap with John DeLallo, Martin Leff and Reedy finish within six seconds of each other. Another step forward for a team that continues to improve. Interestingly, the JV boys "E" squad ran a 1:13:42 team cumulative time. That would place them 13th on the Wildcats top-Varsity team cumulative times for Manhattan. Way to go guys.

Girls: It was another tough day at the office for the girls varsity team, though some very impressive individual performances occurred in the four girls races. Laura Leff ran a conservatively smart race, powering away in the late stages to become WG's 2nd individual race winner with the 2nd fastest WG VanCortlandt race time. Another solid top-20 WG individual time was registered by Anna Leo. The total team effort, however, was not there for the girls this day. They will grab some rest and ready for National Champion Fayetteville-Manlius this week.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  The boys needed a total team effort to make a run at top state-ranked Fayetteville-Manlius---and they did not get it. A rain-soaked, muddy course wasn't the problem, as half the team ran personal records despite the nasty conditions. They will put this one in the black box and close it, enjoying their 5-1 2nd place league finish and preferring to train ahead for their league championship  on October 21st.

Girls: The defending national champion Hornets dominated West Genesee at the finish line but were pushed in the early going. Half the girls ran personal records on the sloppy course. Laura Leff provided plenty of drama as she ran with state leaders Courtney Chapman and Molly Malone until the 800 meter mark. She exploded up Dirt Hill and, by the time she reached the Terrace, had a thirty meter lead. That turned in to a 23 second gap at the finish line and an undefeated dual meet season for Laura. The girls also ended with a 5-1 winning dual meet season, and now train for their league championship.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  The Wildcats decided to go right at state-leading Fayetteville-Manlius, and the league contest quickly evolved into a dual meet-like contest. The 'cats placed their top-5 runners in the first twelve across the finish-line as ran their finest team race of the season and placed 2nd in a meet that was a lot closer than the winners wanted.  Congratulations to all the Wildcats who finished their seasons.

Girls:  Without one of their top-5 runners, the Wildcats mustered all the fight they could and placed 2nd to National defending championship Fayetteville-Manlius. The hope to be healthy for sectionals down the road. Congratulations to all these Wildcats who finished their seasons.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  On September 12th, at the Central Square Invitational, the Northstars of C-NS bested the Wildcats. That trajectory has changed. Following a close victory over their sectional rivals in the Manhattan Invitational merge results, the team realized that this was a pivotal match-up between two teams with hopes for a Federation Championship bid, with the victor signaling their worthiness. In that match-up on a muddy, rain-pelted Marathon course, the Wildcats sent out a big message. Only three days following a draining, but satisfying league championship effort against state-leading F-M, the 'cats dialed it up again, an amazing turn-around indicative of a team still building and one with a lot of heart. West Genesee placed three runners in the top-12 and seven in the top-28 of the 122-runner seeded varsity field. The 3-4 finish of Steve Houghmaster and Billy Gabriel provided the front spark on a soggy day. Sam Reedy continued his rock-solid season with 12th. Then, a short gap before a wave of Wildcats came through in 22nd(Martin Leff), 24th(John DeLallo), 26th(Matt Serrao),  and 28th(Matt Gonnella). Closing out the team effort was the impressive improving performance of first-year sophomore Mark Reilly(38th) and Ethan Wojcik(67th). Not to be outdone, the normal JV squad was entered in the boys unseeded varsity race, and came away with 4th place, providing more evidence of the depth of this 2009 West Genesee squad. Team scorers in that race were Brett Smith(21st), Tom Brogan(33rd), Matt Byrne(40th), D.J. Campbell(45th) and Jake Lafaver(49th). Congratulations to all the team members for a 'job well done.'

Girls: It was could be described as their "short-handed" season, one with key runners injured or ill, the team still fought hard and improved, placing 4th in the 11-team girls seeded varsity race and only 15 points out of 1st place, five behind rival C-NS. Racing with heart and guts was the order of the day. Laura Leff took on a state top-10 runner and Marathon course-record holder in Lauren Mullins of Johnson City. Laura turned in another stellar performance with a second-place individual finish. She was followed by the couragous 17th place effort of Anna Leo, who was coming off a week of missed school/practice with the flu. Right behind in 25th was another solid effort by improving Abby Kastick and hardworking Alex Incaudo in 30th. Katie Riley completed the team scoring with 44th. Like the boys, the girls JV squad was placed in the unseeded varsity race, and they brought home a plaque with an impressive 3rd place in their 11-team field. Alycia Andolina led the team in 12th place with a time that was the 4th best of all Wildcats runners on this day! She was followed by scorers Morgan Farmer(24th), Alyssa Zeman(29th), Alyssa Sherman(40th) and Diane Rotella(50th). It was  a great team effort by all the Wildcats.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  Coming off two strong meet performances, these Wildcats needed another to position themselves for a 2nd consecutive Federation Championship bid. They also wanted to demonstrate their ability to sectional and state skeptics. Sectionals provided both. Their third place placed them ahead of state 5th ranked Baldwinsville and just behind #3 Liverpool. The total team effort did not occur, but team depth carried the day. Steve Houghmaster qualified for his third state championship and the rest train until word on Federation picks come through next Saturday. They are expecting the season to be extended.

Girls: Looking for a strong end to the team season, the girls provided one. With the spotlight on national contender Fayetteville-Manlius, the 'cats worked their way to a 3rd place finish which included racing by #13 ranked Liverpool and sending Laura Leff and Anna Leo to the State Championship. The girls also fared well in the sectional merge, placing 4th among 52 sectional teams and should remain a state top-20 team when final rankings are issued later this month.

Meet Summaries

Boys/Girls:  Awesome. That's the only word to describe the Wildcat efforts of individual qualifiers Steve Houghmaster, Laura Leff and Anna Leo at this year's State Championship.

Start with freshman Anna Leo. Missing half her summer training while recovering from a leg injury, she started slowly and built through the season until it became apparent she might have a shot at states. She followed a brilliant Sectional qualifying race with another all-out 5k effort on the 5k Plattsburgh course. Anna was ranked #106 in Class AA with a tullyrunners.com speed ranking of 106. She placed 61st in her state championship run with a huge five point jump up to a 111 speed rating. She obliterated her previous 20:28.8 5k PR with an incredible 19:25.6 clocking. And her place in the 586 runner state merge was 145th. What a day. What a way to finish a season.

Laura Leff entered the day as the second highest ranked 8th grader in NYS. She left #1 as she clocked a WG female 5k record time of 17:43.1 in placing 9th in the Class AA championship and an unbelievable 10th in the 586 runner state merge. In a thunderous race with the state-champion F-M Hornets, Laura eclipsed her previous 132 speed rating with an eye-popping 146. AND, she did all that after falling in the first 300 meters of the race! Laura was the 2nd individual pick for this week's Federation Championship, following only the current #1 state runner Aisling Cuffee. Absolutely incredible.

A year ago, the rainy ride home from the state championship was a gloomy one for Steve Houghmaster following a disappointing day. Steve quietly promised that this, his final XC state championship, would be different. And was it ever. Steve immediately established himself in a pack of Section III runners that lead the state field, and he never looked back. There was very little ebb and flow to his race as he ran in the 5-7 positions the entire 5k course. Turning it on at the end,  his blazing finish shot him to 4th place in the AA battle, the highest state championship finish ever for a WG athlete. That effort held up very well in the 594 total state merge as he clocked the 6th best state time of the day. His 15:40.2, pending  'official review,' is a West Genesee 5k record. Wow. Steve's superlative race certainly sealed the deal as his Wildcats qualified for their 2nd consecutive Federation Championship on November 21st. To add to the day, Steve was honored with this year's Section III Sportsmanship Award. Totally fitting....

Meet Summaries

Boys:  The boys team stepped up two places from their 2008 performance at Federations, but it was not where they wanted to be. Cross-Country remains the most 'team' of running sports and nowhere was that more evident than on the hilly, but sun-washed Bowdoin Park 5k race course Saturday. Several outstanding performances were diminished by off-performances by critical team members, and the hoped-for top-10 finish was not to be. Matt Gonnella, though still recovering from illness, improved almost 30 places and one and half minutes over his 2008 effort. Martin Leff, the fastest freshman in the field last year, improved 70 places and one and a half minutes in a great race. And Sam Reedy proved why he was voted Most Valuable Runner by his teammates as he delivered another rock-solid, everything-you've-got effort, improving a dramatic 78 places and 1:23 over last year's race. Steve Houghmaster could not go as far up the finish chart after his impressive 2008 12th place finish, but his dominate championship season rise continued as he roared to 5th place with an 16:12.5 clocking on the tough Bowdoin course. With that finish, he has set the standard by which future Wildcats will be judged, and he has propelled himself into the thick of the upcoming Nike regional qualifiers for the National Championship.

The boys team will make their transition to Indoor Track and pursue other running goals before those returning think trails again and log summer miles in preparation for Wildcats XC 2010.

Girls: In her final race of a highly successful inaugural XC season, Laura Leff, faced many great challenges in the form of top NYS team and individual runners, several from her own section. Then too, could an 8th grader string together three consecutive championship top performances? The answer Saturday was an emphatic YES. Laura took the gun and by the half mile mark had established herself in the top-10 of the elite Federation field. At the mile mark, she was 8th. Coming down off the tough Bowdoin hill, she remained 8th, ahead of a host of big-time names in NYS XC. Exiting the back loop and crossing the bridge to the final closing loop, she'd battled to 7th with several runners close behind. She notched up, dropped her pursuers and hung on to the lead pack to finish 7th in a brilliantly executed race, an effort far more veteran than her grade suggests. With the effort, she put her claim to the top 8th grade XC performance in New York this season, and she is currently ranked #33 nation-wide in 5k times as well as #1 for 8th graders. Laura now enjoys some well-deserved transition rest and regeneration before beginning an Indoor season that will be devoted largely to training and strengthening.

Boys Varsity

Meet Summary

Boys:  Steve Houghmaster was the lone WG entry in this year's NXN qualifier at Bowdoin Park. The sky was clear, but the winds were strong, with relatively mild fifty-degree weather and the course in good condition. Steve got out well and was a race leader in the early going, hoping to replicate his strong Federation finish of the week before. This week, however, the Bowdoin hill took its toll. Steve lost positions in that loop that he never regained, though he finished strong in 26th with a credible 16:49.9. No runner in the race broke 16:00.0. The 2009 Wildcats season closes, three seasons, six months and 159 days after it began with summer training's Packet Night at the Erie Canal.
