Meet Summaries

Boys:  The boys succumbed a bit to the pre-season hype and, while winning their White Division Race, did not have the outing they wanted, finishing 3rd in a merge of all teams. But, first meets are first meets; some questions were answered and some important questions were poised. They look ahead to a good training week and a better team performance at the Chittenango Invitational.

Girls: Some solid performances were mixed with some 'first-meet' issues. Like the boys, the girls did not see the total team varsity performance they sought, but now have a starting point for the season.

Boys: Tom Hopkins/Alex DeJohn/Martin Leff

Girls: Alex Incaudo/Katie Bott

Meet Summaries

Boys:  The boys continued their development with another race win, this one without a top-5 performer. A work in progress, the boys again shuffled their order of finish in both races. Stay tuned....

Girls: Still looking for that complete team effort, one with all 1-5 runners performing well, the girls placed 2nd behind a strong CNS squad. Freshman efforts were significant in this one, while the JV team continued to run well.

Meet Summaries

Boys:   The Baldwinsville Bees flew in and schooled the Wildcats on their home course. The Bees went out strong and the 'cats never responded as Baldwinsville went 1-2 on West Genesee followed by 5-6-7 pack that stung the home team. The Wildcats will need some serious re-adjustments in tactics and race temperment before another strong team, Liverpool, arrives on September 24th.

Girls:  The girls mirrored the boys in allowing their competitors to move out strong in Mile 1, forcing the 'cats to play catch-up in the late going. They could not catch up quickly enough and suffered a season-opening home loss. Like the boys, they have a week to prepare for invading Liverpool on September 24th.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  Following a strategic and attitudinal let-down against Baldwinsville the previous week, the boys corrected both as they went out strong and fought the entire race to come away with an exciting victory against state-top 20 Liverpool. It wasn't easy by any stretch. Outstanding efforts by top-5 runners Steve Houghmaster, Tom Hopkins, Jon Richardson and Sam Reedy were required. The victory, in the end, was reduced to a 60 meter sprint to the finish by the WG and Liverpool #5 runners. Sam Reedy won that dual and secured the Wildcat victory. The only thing to rival that exciting victory was the primo early fall weather and the raucous, supportive crowds.

Girls: Ouch. What should have been a close, hard-fought dual meet between sectional rivals quickly dissolved into a WG catch-up game. The Liverpool Warriors borrowed a page from the Baldwinsville boys game-book by charging out and running 1-2-3 for almost 2.5 miles of the 5k course. The 'cats' never recovered, which usually happens when falling behind to a good team like Liverpol. Despite some personal record performances, Liverpool challenges unmet by WG runners put this one out of reach by mid-race. With tough CNS coming into town next Wednesday, the girls now find themselves in the unfamiliar position of fighting for their lives to protect a WG winning-season streak going back to 1995.

Meet Summaries

Boys: The boys had a dual-meet let down against Baldwinsville, came back strong to defeat Liverpool at home, then suffered a let down at McQuaid. In baseball, 1 for 3 is outstanding but this isn't baseball. Hoping to shine on their first big stage of the season, the boys varsity instead presented a mixed effort with some solid efforts but not the 5 required for the team score they wanted. Running strong in the top-5 the first mile, Steve Houghmaster faded in mile 2 and came home out of the top-10, his goal. Tom Hopkins ran strong, but an off-pace performance by Billy Gabriel created a too-large gap between the Wildcat #2 - #3 runners. At invitationals, large gaps are always filled by many runners, running up a team score. That happened to these 'cats. Though besting #10 Ithaca in this one, the team was too far off the pace of local rivals Liverpool, Baldwinsville and Fayetteville-Manlius. They will re-group for an upcoming dual-meet clash with Cicero-North Syracuse.

Girls: Sticking with baseball analogies, the girls could be considered in a 'slump.' Following a disappointing home dual meet loss to Liverpool earlier in the week, the girls hoped to rebound with a good McQuaid team race. They were not able to summon that elusive team race as most ran flat and off previous course personal records despite the good course conditions. And there is no rest for the weary as they welcome sectional power Cicero-North Syracuse onto their home course next Wednesday.

                                                      Meet Summaries

Boys:  What they needed, they got. For the first time all season, the top-7 all ran their game and demonstrated the potential of this year's Wildcat team. They went out fast and never looked back as they took 3 of the top 4 places and allowed CNS to put only three runners in the top 10. The 'cats #7, John DeLallo, displaced the Northstar's #5. It was all business as the 'cats ran off each other for good individual times despite difficult rain-slicked conditions in parts of the trail. Steve Houghmaster paced with the CNS #1 for 1.5 miles, then pulled away on the inner loop to a sizable lead and a lonely first-place finish. In his finest effort of the season, Billy Gabriel was the 'cats #2, and he almost overhauled CNS's Buchannan. Another terrific step-up performance was registered by Andy Incaudo. Masterful in their steadiness were Tom Hopkins and Jon Richardson, with Sam Reedy running one of his most disciplined races of the year. The 'cats will use the momentum from this win not in their next race but in their training as they prepare for Proctor next week and a trip south to the Manhattan Invitational.

Girls: It was a game effort, but with lead runner Colleen Smith hampered by Achilles issues, the girls were unable to challenge state top-20 CNS. Superb efforts, however, were logged by Katie Bott who is clearly having her best XC season ever and newcomer Alex Incaudo who is beginning a charge on the areas best runners. The girls hope to get healthy and use this game effort to build into a strong October campaign.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  The boys continued with solid dual meet performances, emphasizing controlled a pace and pack running(a #1-5 gap of 4 seconds). Lots of good individual battles were fought behind the main pack. Up front, the 'cat placed the first 8 across the finish line and 11 of the first 12. It's on to Manhattan and, with recent advances,  an excellent chance for major improvements on their McQuaid performance.

Girls: The girls were in command start to finish as they enjoyed their first dual-meet victory of the season in a tough league. Proctor put two in the top-10, but it was all pretty much Wildcats with a 1-2-3 finish for an automatic win. They hope to tighten up their #4-5 gap as they head to Manhattan and a chance to create a late-season surge.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  Picture-perfect race conditions in the Big Apple. The result was many PR performances. Most of those, however, came to JV runners which means the varsity squad did not have the day it was hoping for, four places out of a trophy 2nd place in their race. They did make up some ground on state top-20 teams and Section III competitors. Will there be time, however, to 'elevate' as high as they want/need to go? That's a question for the runners to answer. The answer comes quickly, as they collide with Southern Tier powers this coming Saturday at the Marathon Invitational, their last before championship races.

Girls: The finish order for the girls was again altered as they struggled to tame the dusty trails of VanCortlandt. It was rough day for the ladies as only one runner, Katie Bott, cracked the top-25 of their race. Katie and Alex Incaudo were the only two to run all-time WG top-25 times, always the sign of tough team day at the office. They will attempt to rebound this coming Saturday at the Marathon Invitational.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  It was sweep day for the boys Wildcats as they rolled to victory in every race they entered. The boys JV squad created an inspiring sight(if you're a West Genesee fan) by putting the first 4 runners across the finish line. The Boys Unseeded squad was equally impressive as they placed all scorers in the top-30, led by Alex DeJohn who ran the 4th fastest Wildcat time of the day. Only in the varsity seeded race did things go a little out of whack where the 'cats typical #3 and #4 runners had sub-par days. However, an outstanding step-up performance by sophomore John DeLallo and solid races by Steve Houghmaster, Tom Hopkins and Sam Reedy propelled the squad to victory over Class C #1 state ranked Newark Valley among others.

Girls: The girls races were less dramatic but solid, with all teams scoring 4th in their fields. The girls varsity race also saw some mixing of top-7 places but also strong races by Colleen Smith, Katie Bott and Kristin Waters as they bested both Ithaca and Corning. With further strengthening and solid championship performances, the girls could move back into the Class AA top-20.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  Another big step up for the boys. Placing the scoring 5 in the top-20, the boys outlegged Baldwinsville and ran closer to league champion Liverpool. One of the keys was the 6th place performance of Billy Gabriel who finished a second ahead of #7 Tom Hopkins. Steve Houghmaster led the Wildcats with a 3rd place. Sam Reedy(14th) and Andy Incaudo(18th) completed the team scoring. With this strong showing, the boys continue their quest of a Federation Championship bid.

Girls: The girls continued improving, this time by racing past host Baldwinsville as they placed 3rd, not far off #15th ranked Cicero-North Syracuse and winner #12th ranked Liverpool. Katie Bott shined, placing 5th overall with her fine race performance of the season. Alex Incaudo followed in 9th, with Colleen Smith right behind in 10th. A strong 14th place finish by strengthening Kristin Waters preceded a 24th place effort by Katilyn Richards. The girls hope to continue racing well at Sectionals.

Meet Summaries

Boys:  The latest statement by the boys was a third place finish, their best since a 2nd place finish by the 1985 Wildcats. They held that 3rd place in the 67 team sectional merge, and they actually ran a lower team cumulative time than 2nd place Liverpool, currently ranked #8 in Class AA. Following an impressive 1-2-3 finish by F-M runners, Steve Houghmaster was the first 'other-school' finisher in 4th, out-legging higher ranked Shaun Thompson of Baldwinsville and Colin Savage of Liverpool. Tom Hopkins ran a courageous race for 10th place. Close behind in 12th was Billy Gabriel. Sam Reedy crossed in 25th and fast-improving Matt Gonnella closed out the Wildcat scoring in 31st. Steve will continue on to states. The others will train this week and await the Federations selections next Saturday. Go 'cats....

Girls: Another good race by the girls. Despite the domination of the race by defending national champion Fayetteville-Manlius, the girls placed four in the top-20 and finished only three points behind #3 Liverpool. Katie Bott was the #6 individual finisher, missing states by one spot. It was a great pack effort by the 'cats with them taking the 15-16-18-19 spots. Kathleen O'Meara, Amanda Brown, Kayla Murphy, Kristin Waters and Colleen Smith trudged their final finish chute as Wildcats. Congratulations to them. Returning 'cats will fashion a different '09' squad but one that hopes to continue the record of excellence past teams, including this years',  have forged.

Meet: NY State Championship, Sunken Meadows State Park, 11/08/08

Meet Results

Meet Summary

Steve Houghmaster competed in his second consecutive State Championship following his individual qualification. It was a tough race day and disappointing race for Steve as he ran afoul the infamous "Cardiac Hill' on the Sunken Meadows 5k course following a strong start and a top-20 place going into the hill. He was unable recover, placing a disappointing 54th in the Class AA contest. The saving grace of the weekend occurred on the long, rainy ride home when Steve and Coach Vermeulen found out West Genesee had been selected to compete in the 11/15 Federation Championship.

Meet: NY Federation Championship, Bowdoin Park, 11/15/08

Meet Results

L to R: Andy Incaudo, Steve Houghmaster, Billy Gabriel, Coach Vermeulen, Tom Hopkins, Sam Reedy, Martin Leff,

Matt Gonnella, Jon Richardson.

Meet Summary

Boys: It was both a team wrap and a century first, a terrific season finale and the first Federation appearance since 1985. Following a determined practice week of not-knowing, then a week of training as a Federation Championship selection, the Wildcats bused south to take on New York's best and the tough Bowdoin 5k course south of Poughkeepsie. Ankle problems had already relegated Any Incaudo to the sidelines as a cheerleader for this race, but on Thursday, Jon Richardson suffer a freak knee accident in gym and was unable to recover in time. That brought the team down to six. Predicted to place 17th, they did one better, coming in a 16th. Special distinctions went to Steve Houghmaster for his 12th place individual finish and to Martin Leff, who was the fastest freshman at Feds with his 177th place in the 251 runner elite field. Great job by all the runners. Great year for the 'cats who overcame injuries and adversity to reach a WG milestone in finishing as a state top-10 team.

Meet: Nike Cross National NY Qualifier, Bowdoin Park, 11/29/08

Meet Results

Boys: Steve Houghmaster kept the accomplished 2008 Wildcat Cross-Country season going by deciding to throw his hat(feet) into the ring at the Nike Cross National New York Qualifier championship, racing for a top-5 individual finish that would have punched his ticket for Oregon and the Nike National Championship. It was not to be this year, but not for lack of resolve and effort as Steve placed 39th in the 58 runner field of New York's best. So ends a great season for this boys squad with the goal of returning to 'Feds' in 2009 and maybe just bringing a full team to next year's NCN qualifier.
